Job Description - Phlebotomist

On-site laboratory services at the VA Maine Healthcare System, Togus. The Phlebotomist will perform routine and specialized blood collection procedures, ensuring compliance with VA policies and maintaining high standards of patient care and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipunctures and capillary blood collection techniques following standard protocols.

  • Properly identify patients and accurately label specimens.

  • Process and transport collected specimens to designated laboratory areas.

  • Maintain proper patient records and documentation in the VA’s electronic health records system.

  • Follow infection control and safety procedures in compliance with VA and OSHA regulations.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel.

  • Prepare specimens for shipment following required packaging and transport protocols.


Compensation Package:

  • Total Weekly Gross Package (40 Hours): $952.40

  • Estimated Total Contract Package: $16,324.14

    • Hourly Pay Rate (Taxable): $18.88/hr

    • Overtime Pay Rate (Taxable): $28.32/hr

    • Total Weekly Taxable Income: $755.20

    • Fringe Benefits (Non-Taxable):  ($4.93/hr)




Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of recent phlebotomy experience.

  • Education & Certification:

    • Certification in Phlebotomy preferred but not required.

    • Strong knowledge of venipuncture techniques and specimen handling.

  • Clearances & Medical Requirements:

    • Negative Tuberculosis (TB) test or interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) within the past year.

    • Proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR), Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus (Td), and Influenza.

    • Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (or approved exemption with required testing).

    • Completion of bloodborne pathogen training per OSHA guidelines.

    • Fingerprinting and background check required.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.

    • Strong knowledge of infection control practices.

    • Excellent communication and patient interaction skills.
