Postpartum Doula

Scope of Services Overview

The Postpartum Doula is an independent contractor engaged by BBJ/HBCU to support new families during the critical postpartum period. The contractor provides physical, emotional, and educational support to help parents adjust to life with a newborn, and delivers educational programming in support of the Healthy Start mission.

Scope of Services & Deliverables

The following describes the deliverable outcomes the contractor is engaged to produce. The contractor determines how, when, and where work is performed to meet these outcomes, subject to any deadlines in the Contractor Services Agreement.

Postpartum & Family Support

• Provide in-home, client-centered postpartum support including physical care for birthing individuals and newborns. Deliverable: visit documentation submitted per contact.


• Assist with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and newborn care education. Deliverable: education notes documented per visit.


• Offer emotional support, reassurance, and resources for managing postpartum challenges.


• Recognize signs of postpartum mood disorders and provide timely referrals to appropriate healthcare professionals. Deliverable: referral documentation submitted within 24 hours of referral.


• Teach and facilitate monthly educational classes as specified in the Contractor Services Agreement. Deliverable: completed class with attendance record and summary submitted after each session.

Community Engagement & Documentation

• Represent BBJ/HBCU at tabling and community events as agreed in the Contractor Services Agreement. Deliverable: event attendance log submitted monthly.


• Attend relevant program meetings as necessary to fulfill contracted deliverables.


• Maintain accurate, confidential records of all client interactions and coordinate triage with appropriate team members. Deliverable: records submitted per program documentation schedule.

Contractor Capabilities

The following describes the credentials and capacity a contractor must demonstrate to successfully fulfill this scope of services. These are not hiring criteria — they are the baseline capabilities required to meet the deliverables above.

• Minimum education: High school diploma or equivalent (experience may substitute for educational requirement)


• Certified Doula through Black Birth Justice or a recognized certifying institution — required


• Demonstrated postpartum care experience


• CPR and infant first aid certification required (or willingness to obtain prior to engagement start)


• Knowledge of lactation support, infant care, and postpartum recovery (or willingness to obtain training)


• Strong commitment to culturally competent and trauma-informed care


• Proficiency with Google Suite and client-tracking software


• Independent, reliable personal transportation


• Availability for flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and on-call as needed to fulfill deliverables

Contractor Independence

Classification Protections

The contractor sets their own schedule and determines their own work methods. BBJ/HBCU does not assign specific hours, daily start/end times, or supervise day-to-day activities. The contractor is not eligible for employee benefits, tax withholding, workers’ compensation, or unemployment insurance. Form 1099-NEC will be issued for compensation of $600 or more in a calendar year. The contractor is solely responsible for all self-employment taxes.

The contractor may provide services to other organizations simultaneously, provided there is no conflict with BBJ/HBCU deliverables or confidentiality obligations.
