Type: Part Time (Temporary Contracted)

Rate: $20.00 per hour

Location: 2806 McGavock Pike Nashville, TN

Catholic Charities was founded in 1962 with the mission of providing wholistic care within Middle Tennessee. Our programs consist of the following’ homelessness prevention, re-housing, food distribution, emergency materials, utility payments, refugee resettlement, clinical counseling, adoption, and family support, parenting, and multi-pronged community support through neighborhood embedded family resource centers. SUMMARY 

Catholic Charities has an opening for the position of Refugee Youth Program Staff in its New Americans Department. This position is part time, approximately 16-20 hours per week and is located at the Catholic Pastoral Center at 2806 McGavock Pike, Nashville, TN 37214. This position is seasonal, lasting from May 27th – July 31st. Hours typically fall between 3:00pm-7:00pm, depending on the transportation route. 

 
 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary functions of this position are to assist in transportation and implementation of the Refugee Youth Program (RYP). The program provides trauma education to children ranging from 5-14 years old through academic enrichment using the KidzLit and KidzMath curricula, and trauma-informed arts/recreation/enrichment opportunities. Transportation to and from programming is provided to all program participants.

 
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists in program implementation, management, and evaluation of program activities and curriculum for the refugee youth program. 
  • Uses an Agency vehicle to transport a maximum of 6 program participants from their school(s) or home(s) to the program site. At the conclusion of the program day, returns participants to their individual homes, ensuring that at least one parent or guardian receives the child. 
  • Plans and implements daily activities for refugee youth in the afterschool program such as facilitating completion of homework      assignments, engaging in recreational activities, etc. 
  • Monitors participant successes and struggles, helping them to problem solve when appropriate. 
  • Promotes the program within the community by responding to questions from parents or schools regarding program activities and requirements. 
  • Participates in twelve (12) hours of in-service training. 
  • Maintains accurate client/program records regarding services provided according to Agency guidelines, using the database(s) provided by  the agency and within Agency time frame. 
  • Actively participates in supervision sessions, periodic team meetings, and training. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

  

Education and/or Experience 

  • High school diploma or GED with 2 or more years of related experience OR associate degree, preferably in social      work. 
  • Prior experience working with refugees and/or youth. 
  • Prior experience tutoring or teaching is desirable. 

Additional Skills or Requirements 

  • Proficiency in one or more refugee language with a preference for Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Dari, Arabic, Burmese, Somali, Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, or Kurdish.   
  • Knowledge of child behavior and development. 
  • Sufficient maturity for providing leadership to children. 
  • Trauma training certification or experience is desirable. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Must be at least 21 years old. 
  • Ability to facilitate intercultural communication and to create an inclusive environment. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact in dealing with the public and staff. 
  • Ability to handle confidential information with extreme  professionalism. 
  • Ability to plan and organize work, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.  
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills. 
  • Ability to work well as a team and independently with minimal direction. 
  • Good knowledge of community resources as it relates to refugee youth. 
  • Certification in CPR with knowledge of basic first aid preferred. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications. 
  • Ability to learn databases and other systems. 
  • Current driver’s license required. Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle and provide own transportation
