Why Join Virtual Peace of Mind (VPM)?

Transforming Access to Youth Mental Health through Virtual Care

Virtual Peace of Mind (VPM) is a fast-growing, fully remote private mental health practice dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care across multiple states. Our mission is to empower clinicians with the flexibility, resources, and support they need to deliver exceptional care — while advancing equitable mental health access for all.

Role Overview:

The Behavioral Health Session Interpreter supports communication between clinical professionals and K–12 students/families whose primary language is not English. The interpreter’s role is to accurately convey spoken communication during counseling sessions while preserving meaning, tone, and emotional intent.

This position is not a teaching or counseling role; it is a clinical communication role that enables equitable access to mental health care. Interpreters participate in live therapy sessions, psychoeducational meetings, parent consultations, and occasional school collaboration meetings while maintaining strict confidentiality and neutrality.

Key responsibilities include but limited to:

  • Provide real-time interpretation during individual, family, and group therapy sessions

  • Interpret both directions (student/family ↔ clinician) without summarizing or altering meaning

  • Preserve emotional tone and clinical nuance when translating sensitive topics

  • Clarify cultural or linguistic concepts only when requested by the clinician

  • Assist with parent meetings, intake appointments, treatment planning reviews, and discharge meetings

  • Maintain session flow without engaging in side conversations or independent guidance

  • Support communication during crisis or safety discussions under clinician direction

  • Document interpreter participation per session requirements (attendance acknowledgment only; no clinical notes)

  • Follow all HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality requirements

  • Notify the team of scheduling conflicts and attend sessions punctually

Scope Restrictions: Interpreters DO NOT:

  • Provide counseling, advice, or personal opinions

  • Modify clinical questions

  • Explain therapy concepts independently

  • Coach student responses

  • Advocate for one party over another

  • Conduct sessions without the clinician present

Qualifications & Preferred Experience:

  • Fluency in English and at least one additional language (verbal and comprehension)

  • Ability to interpret live conversations accurately and in real time

  • Comfortable interpreting emotionally sensitive topics (mental health, family dynamics, safety concerns)

  • Professional communication skills with children, adolescents, and adults

  • Reliable internet connection and private workspace for telehealth sessions

  • Availability before and after school hours (typically 7:00 AM – 9:30 AM or 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM EST.

  • Experience interpreting in medical, behavioral health, or school settings

  • Knowledge of cultural considerations affecting communication and mental health expression

  • Familiarity with telehealth platforms (Zoom or secure video systems)

  • Experience working with children or adolescents

  • Interpreter certification (medical or community interpreting) — preferred but not required

Success Measures:

  • Accuracy of interpretation

  • Professional neutrality

  • Punctual attendance

  • Compliance with privacy regulations

  • Ability to maintain therapeutic communication flow

Ideal Candidate Traits:

  • Calm and composed in emotionally charged conversations

  • Attentive listener with excellent memory recall

  • Professional and non-reactive demeanor

  • Culturally aware and respectful

  • Comfortable working around children and families in sensitive situations

Compensation

  • Hourly Range: $30 per hourly scheduled session.
