Job Description - Genealogy Research Expert

“This role is not eligible for U.S. immigration sponsorship.”

About the Job

FamFinder is seeking genealogy researchers to help users who are stuck finding specific people or records. This role involves reviewing user questions, explaining what information may or may not exist, and guiding users toward the most effective next steps. Work is asynchronous, remote, and focused on research guidance rather than full case resolution.

At LTV, we all work closely together across teams so there's no red tape or bureaucracy. We get things done!

What You Will Get to Do

What You'll Do

  • Review incoming user research questions and assess what's actually being asked vs. what the user may need
  • Produce a structured research report for each question, covering the research question, sources consulted, analysis of findings, a clear conclusion, and recommended next steps, and citations of collections used
  • Explain what records are likely to exist for a given time period, geography, or record type, and why certain records may be unavailable, incomplete, or hard to find
  • Recommend specific sources, databases, archives, or research strategies tailored to each user's situation
  • Flag questions that require additional context before a meaningful answer can be given
  • Maintain a consistent, warm, and accessible tone. Users range from total beginners to experienced hobbyist researchers

What We're Looking For

  • Hands-on genealogical research experience, ideally spanning multiple record types (vital records, census, immigration, probate, military, church records, etc.)
  • Familiarity with U.S. records is essential; experience with international records (especially European, UK, or Latin American) is a strong plus
  • Comfortable explaining the absence of records, not just where to look, but why something might not be findable
  • Familiar with the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) or equivalent documentation practices
  • Strong written communication; ability to explain complex research situations clearly to non-experts
  • Experience with major genealogy platforms and databases (Ancestry, FamilySearch, FindMyPast, etc.)
  • Certification (CG, AG) is a plus but not required. We care more about research instincts than credentials

What You Bring to the Table

  • B.A. in Family History & Genealogy or 1-2 years experience in genealogical research and methods including paleography and source document analysis.
  • At least 1 years of experience in compiling and preparing historical records for genealogy projects.
  • Ability to learn or experience in automating tasks in text processing systems using regular expressions and scripting languages.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong problem solving and interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a diverse team as well as work independently.

About Us

LTV was founded in New York by Josh Levy and Ross Cohen in 2007. At the time their mission was to provide easy and affordable access to public records. Something that in 2007, was only really accessible to corporations. Since then their mission has expanded to developing products and services that grant access to information and data across a number of verticals. In service of this mission, LTV has 9 consumer brands including BeenVerified, NumberGuru, PeopleLooker, NeighborWho, Ownerly, PeopleSmart, Bumper, ReversePhone, and MoneyBot5000.

Our mission is to develop a diverse portfolio of technologies, products, and services, that give all people equal access to unbiased data and information. We believe that through this access people can empower and protect themselves in today’s ever-changing world, filled with fake news, deception, and a lack of transparency.
