Job Description - SANY District Speech and Language Therapist

Reports To

The District Speech and Language position will report to the District Special Education Coordinator.

Job Overview

Speech-language pathologists/therapists (SLPs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in our students districtwide to include our schools in Utica, Syracuse, and Rochester. Hire would be working under a contractor agreement. 

Responsibilities and Duties

 Prevention—SLPs will be integrally involved in the efforts of schools to prevent academic failure, no matter what form those initiatives take (e.g., Response to Intervention or RTI) this includes Speech Improvement Processes at the building levels.

 Evaluation: SLP’s will conduct screening and testing, obtain diagnostic information, analyze information and make recommendations regarding programs and services.

 Data Collection and Analysis—SLPs, like all educators, are accountable for student performance outcomes. Therefore, the SLP’s essential responsibilities include supporting data-based decision making by gathering and interpreting data related to individual student performance as well as overall program success.

 Compliance—In performing their duties, SLPs are responsible for meeting federal and state mandates and adhering to local policies as well. Activities may include IEP development, Medicaid billing, report writing, student progress monitoring, parental contact logs and treatment plan/therapy service log development.

Student Progress: SLPs will actively engage students in goal planning, intervention implementation, monitoring of progress, and self-advocacy appropriate to age and ability level.

 Therapy Sessions: Plans therapy and uses appropriate diagnostic tools and therapy techniques to support the curriculum. The employee manages time, facilities and resources to facilitate delivery of services. The employee promotes effective interpersonal relations and engages in continuing professional growth.

 Consultation: Provides consultation, seeks assistance of others, uses related research and makes recommendations and referrals for the implementation of services.

Professional Development: participates in all required professional development required by the district as well as to maintain their licensing. 

Other Responsibilities: Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications

 Master's degree or higher or equivalent as determined by the New York State Education Department

NYS Speech and Language Pathologist Licensure

 NYS TSHH (Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped)/TSSLD (Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities) certification

 Continuing Education: completion of the specific requirements for maintenance of your licensures and certifications
