Job Description - Research Technician - Contract

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for preparing product for testing of capability and durability, installing products or components on test stand for test, and monitoring the performance of the product or component being tested. This position is also responsible for preparing, calibrating and attaching instrumentation to the product or component for the purpose of gathering test data.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Associates degree in electronics, mechanical engineering, or industrial engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working with mechanical workings and components of transmissions and related products.
  • Experience with various types of data acquisition equipment.
  • Knowledge of the design of assembly tooling and test fixtures

Computer Skills:
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledgeable in 3-d modeling, SolidWorks preferred
  • Basic Knowledge in 2-d CAD, Draft Sight or AutoCad preferred
  • Knowledgeable in creation of spreadsheets
  • Skilled in the use of data acquisition equipment, Dataq and National Instruments preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of PLM, SmarTeam preferred

Communication Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills and listening skills that allow being able to work with people in all levels of the organization and external customers.
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

Technical Requirements:
  • Ability to follow technical test set up instructions, and read prints, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Skilled in the use of measuring devices such as gauges, micrometers, calipers, etc.
  • Skilled in the use of mechanical hand tools. Familiar with the operation of machine tools (drills, mills, lathes, etc.).
  • Understanding of testing and analysis of products and components.

Work Environment:
  • Racine, Wisconsin
  • Ability to travel for Twin Disc entity and customer visits a plus

Specialized Knowledge:
  • Knowledgeable in plumbing, hydraulics, and pneumatics, and some limited electronics.
  • Knowledgeable in data acquisition equipment

Other Requirements:
 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently, taking direction from test requests as assigned by supervisor. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member on major test projects.

Essential Job Functions

Provides technical assistance to the engineer in charge of specific project.

2.   Reviews test request and item to be tested, type of test, and test parameters.  Identifies and locates necessary test equipment, tools, and supplies.
      3.   Disassembles prototype, product or component to be tested in order to attach sensors where specified on test request.  Measures critical components, "blues" certain surfaces to accommodate later checks for wear, drills and taps holes to accommodate sensors.
4.   Reassembles prototype, product or component to operating configuration.
5.   Configures test stand so that test unit can be installed.  May modify test fixtures, stands, etc. to accommodate proper connection of unit to test stand. Connects unit to stand, hydraulics, instrumentation, etc.
6.   Prepares, installs, and calibrates instrumentation and data acquisition equipment to monitor and record test data.
7.   Sets and operates test stand, pumps, etc. to appropriate run speed, pressure, and duration.  Periodically, monitors test readings to determine if they are within parameters established on test request.  Safely continues periodic monitoring while working on other projects.
8.   Upon test completion, detaches unit from test stand, disassembles test unit or tested component, measures critical components, and provides raw test data to other technician or engineer who develops actual test report, in some instances Research Technician may write test report.  Disassembles test equipment, and may reassemble unit.
9.   Removes instrumentation and data acquisition equipment. 
10. Perform maintenance on test equipment, or other related mechanical lab equipment.
11. On rare occasion, may be directed to remove or install a unit from/in a field installation.
12. Supervises 0 employees.
