Description

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: SEASONAL CREW WORKER

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to perform unskilled to semi-skilled and manual labor work in the maintenance of the City’s roads, sidewalks, and utilities, or the collection and disposal of the City’s refuse.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs general laboring tasks in one of the following areas: sanitation, transportation, wastewater treatment, and water filtration.
  • Participates in cleaning equipment and performing preventive maintenance; makes minor repairs to equipment.
  • Operates a variety of trucks and equipment in performing tasks.
  • Inspects equipment and assigned work area for safety hazards. 
  • Flags traffic.
  • Observes all safety rules and guidelines.

Crew Workers assigned to Sanitation perform the following additional duties:

  • Loads, hauls, and unloads debris and refuse.
  • Walks behind or rides on sanitation truck on assigned route; loads refuse bags from street curb into truck; reports any violations of refuse ordinances to supervisor.
  • Deals with the public at recycling center.
  • Sorts materials for recycling; bales recyclables.
  • Notifies supervisor when inventory is at capacity.
  • Locks and secures recycling facility; maintains logs on visitors at the recycling center.
  • Operates and maintains limb chipping machine; pulls limbs, cuts logs, hauls limbs by hand.
  • Supplies cones for safety; cleans area after working.

Crew Workers assigned to Water Filtration perform the following additional duties:

  • Assists in the repair and construction of the water system.
  • Mows grass and maintains landscaping.
  • Maintains buildings, lakes, and dams.
  • Maintains vehicles and equipment, including chemical feeders.
  • Assists Maintenance Mechanic and operators.

Crew Workers assigned to Wastewater Treatment perform the following additional duties:

  • Assists with maintaining treatment plant.
  • Assists Press Operator with cleaning, maintaining, and operating sludge press.
  • Calculates and graphs settlometer results.
  • Cleans rot-o-mat screens; checks tubes on clarifiers; sprays down thickeners; checks pumps and lift stations; cleans effluent; runs settlometer test; takes sludge depths; monitors septic tank haulers and dumps; tests generators.
  • Assists operators with daily checklist, ground protection plan, and fire extinguisher check list.
  • Collects samples for lab analysis.
  • Perform lawn care work; cleans all buildings at wastewater treatment plant.

Crew Workers, Senior assigned to Transportation Department perform the following additional duties:

  • Assists in replacing and finishing concrete; makes repairs on sidewalks; lays brick sidewalks; removes old concrete to landfill; cuts rebar; makes curbs and gutters.
  • Assists with repairs to roads, service cuts, utility services, curbs, and gutters; patches pot holes; changes or replaces manhole covers; replaces risers; fills in sink holes.
  • Sweeps and cleans streets.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.


Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 

PERFORMANCE APTITUDES

  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan. Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments. 
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information. 
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition and subtraction. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment.  
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by well established procedures or sequences.

ADA COMPLIANCE

  • Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
