Seasonal Workers

Position Overview:  The City of Altoona has opportunities for seasonal work in the Streets, Utilities, and Finance  Departments for the Summer of 2026.  These are seasonal positions where the successful candidates will work Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. for the Streets and Utilities Departments and from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. for the Finance Department. The hourly wage for these seasonal positions is $16.00 per hour.

Day to Day Job Functions:

Streets Department:

• Operate safely the maintenance and construction equipment, which may include, but is not limited to, dump trucks, tractors, loaders, backhoes, mowers, saws, welders, drill press, and other equipment as needed.


• Load and unloads heavy objects, materials and supplies as needed.


• Perform cement flat work, labor and finishing detail for various roadway, sidewalk and public works projects.

Utilities:

• Assist other personal as directed in the operation, maintenance, and repairs of the Municipal Utilities facilities, water distribution system, and sewer collection system.


• Record readings from meters, gauges, lab data, and related controls and equipment to maintain proper pumping rates, flows, and treatment processes.


• Complete routine maintenance and minor repairs of storm sewers, water mains, sanitary sewers, water treatment plants, waste water lift stations, pump stations, vehicles and equipment, including general cleaning, etc.

Finance:

• Utilize Microsoft Office applications (Excel and Word) to perform routine office tasks.


• Manage document organization by accurately scanning, indexing, and filing records in both electronic and physical formats.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.


• Must be 18 years of age.


• Must possess a valid Iowa Driver's License and meet the requirements of the City's motor vehicle policy.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions When Outdoors:

• Position requires outdoor work where heat, cold, precipitation, and the results of weather and nature may be encountered.


• During summer months outside temperatures can be over 100 degrees for entire scheduled workday.


• During different job duties the noise inside or outside can become very loud


• May be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed.


• Position requires travel within and outside of the City which imposes common travel hazards.


• There is no residency requirement for this position.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions When Indoors:

• Typical climate-controlled office.
  


• Primarily sedentary work with sitting for extended periods of time.


• Occasional standing, walking, or light lifting (usually under 20 lbs.).


• Frequent use of computers, phones, and office equipment.
