Position: Shear and Brake Operator – Structural Steel
Location: Richmond, VA
Type: Contract-to-Hire
Shift: 2nd Shift
We’re seeking a skilled Shear and Brake Operator to join our team and work with structural steel components.
What You’ll Do
- Operate hydraulic and mechanical shears and press brakes to cut, bend, and form structural steel according to detailed shop drawings and blueprints.
- Measure and inspect raw materials and finished parts to ensure accuracy in length, angles, and tolerances using tools such as tape measures, protractors, calipers, and squares.
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, cut lists, and bend charts to determine material type, thickness, dimensions, and sequence of operations.
- Perform setup and adjustments on machines, including back gauges, blade clearances, and tooling, to ensure proper operation and quality control.
- Safely handle and position heavy steel plate and beam stock using overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, follow all safety protocols and PPE requirements, and perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience operating shears and press brakes in a structural steel or metal fabrication environment
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and bend charts
- Familiarity with measuring tools (tape measures, calipers, protractors, squares) to ensure precision and accuracy
- Basic mechanical knowledge for setup, adjustments, and troubleshooting of machines
- Ability to safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging equipment (certifications a plus)
- Strong attention to detail, quality standards, and commitment to workplace safety
- Ability to lift, move, and handle heavy materials as required
