Job Description - STEM Engagement Support Specialist NASA Langley Research Center STEM Engagement

Description

Guardians of Honor (GOH) is a small management consulting firm supporting the federal government since 1997 (www.gohnow.com). GOH is seeking an exceptional STEM engagement professional. 

STEM Engagement Support Specialist is a contractor responsible for independently performing and supporting NASA Langley OSTEM’s outreach and special event programs. The contractor in this role will exercise judgment and initiative in assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance, and be fully aware of GOH’s and NASA’s operating procedures and policies.

The ideal candidate should have experience working with people of all ages and a background in working for schools, museums, science centers, or other STEM-focused businesses or organizations. The STEM Engagement Support Specialist must also be able to contribute to the team’s positive and proactive culture while working in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, and high-energy environment. 

Reports To: Project Manager & Deputy Program Manager

STEM Engagement Support Specialist will:  

  • Participate in training sessions to learn NASA OSTEM educational lessons and activities
  • Set up and break down activities before and after the event
  • Facilitate in-person activities which introduce children, teachers, and adults to STEM concepts related to NASA’s mission and work
  • Be energetic and care about engaging participants of all ages
  • Work with NASA OSTEM staff to ensure successful program implementation
  • Communicate with NASA OSTEM staff to ensure proper content and problem-solving
  • Always maintain confidentiality and exhibit discretion where appropriate

Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills–public speaking, customer service, presentation and interpersonal
  • Exemplary teaching practice, skills, and knowledge
  • Exceptional team environment and organization skills
  • Experience developing and delivering classroom STEM lesson plans and activities
  • Ability to react positively to changing circumstances at the event
  • Coursework beyond a high school diploma in science, engineering, mathematics, STEM education, or related field
  • Familiar with inquiry-based teaching methods
  • Be self-assured, confident, and focused
  • Strategic and organizational skills
  • Leadership and personal effectiveness
  • Motivation, coaching, and listening skills

Other Duties:

  • The scope of the job may change as necessitated by business demands. Also, the essential functions described are not a comprehensive list of duties and responsibilities; additional tasks may be assigned. 

Time Commitment Requirement:

Must be able to commit to a time frame:

  • August 14, 2025
  • Training on an evening before the event (date/time TBD)

Work Environment: Employees work with moderate noise, varied temperature conditions, and occasional sun exposure.

Physical demands: The job requires standing for extended periods and occasional walking and bending. Typically, the job involves 75% standing, 15% reaching, and 10% bending. Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 20 pounds.

Position type and expected work hours: This is a temporary contract position working up to 20 hours per event, depending on workload.

Terms of compensation

  • 1099 contract employment
  • $30 per hour

Travel: Events are in Hampton Roads, VA local area

Required education and experience: Bachelor’s degree required, STEM teaching / classroom experience required

Additional eligibility qualifications: 

  • U.S. Citizen
  • A minimum of 4 years of industry-specific experience
