KIPP Memphis Public Schools is part of KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program), a national network of tuition-free, open-enrollment, public schools that are successful in helping students from educationally underserved communities develop the knowledge, skills, character, and habits needed to succeed in college and the competitive world beyond. There are currently 280 KIPP schools across the nation serving nearly 120,000 students. Founded in 2002, KIPP Memphis serves over 1,200 K-12 students in our three North Memphis schools and almost 900 alumni on their journeys to-and-through college with our KIPP Forward Program.

Job Description

Purpose and Scope

This position is responsible for professional instructions during summer school designed to provide academic, social, physical, and skills development for students in specific grades/subject areas to prepare them to be successful citizens and workers in the 21st century.

Summer Boost 2025:

  • Staff PD:  Tuesday June 3, 2025 & Thursday, June 5, 2025 (All Math Educators) 
  • Staff PD:  Wednesday June 4, 2025 & Thursday, June 5, 2025 (All Literacy Educators)
  • All Staff Room Set up and Meeting:   June 9, 2025 (9am-1pm)
  • Summer Boost Dates:  Tuesday June 10, 2025, to Friday July 11, 2025
  • No School on:   June 19 (Juneteenth), July 4 (Independence Day)
  • Daily Hours:  8:00am to 3:00pm
  • Location:  KIPP Memphis Collegiate Elementary/Middle (230 Henry Avenue)
  • Grades:  Rising 1st through 8th graders
  • Hourly Rate:  $65/hr

Available teaching positions:

  • Math - 8 positions
  • ELA - 8 positions
  • STEM - 1 position
  • SPED - 1 position
  • PE - 1 position
  • Art - 1 position

Essential Job Functions:

  • Creates a Summer Boost educational environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and needs of the students; prepares instructional materials for classes assigned and provides written evidence of preparation to Site Coordinator – Summer Boost upon request.
  • Establishes a standard of classroom behavior; maintains classroom management inside and outside of the school.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on an established timetable, and provides written and oral progress reports to parents/guardians, Site Coordinator - Summer Boost and selected staff. Administers tests and assessments.
  • Plans summer school curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to meet individual needs of students within state and Summer Boost requirements based on the educational, physical, and emotional levels of student development.
  • Confers with parents and appropriate resource staff to develop educational programs for students.
  • Creates learning materials geared to students’ abilities and interests.
  • Instructs students by using educational strategies and techniques to improve sensory, motor and perceptual-motor development, perception, memory, language, communication skills, cognition, social, and emotional development.
  • Motivates students and provides consistent reinforcement of learning skills, and provides continuous assessment and feedback to students for all learning activities.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, network and Summer Boost regulations.
  • Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing Summer Boost student activities and conduct.
  • Sponsors student activities/clubs/teams/organization and tutors students as requested.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid Tennessee License with an endorsement in the grade/subject taught
  • Must demonstrate achievement of TVAAS Level 3,4, or 5
  • Commitment for the entire period of summer school including all training dates outlined
  • Availability for summer school closeout operations which may occur after the new academic year contract has started.
  • This position is for SUMMER BOOST ONLY.

Additional Information:

  • Hourly Rate: $65/hr.

 

Other Qualifications:

Satisfactory criminal records check, pre-hire and annually thereafter, if applicable. Must be eligible to work in the United States and provide work authorization. Occasional travel to KIPP Memphis campuses may be required. 

ADA Requirements:

Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers

Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.

Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.

  • Prolonged periods standing and actively monitoring student behavior while teaching
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child
  • Must be able to facilitate classroom transitions by walking through hallways and up and down stairs with students
