Position Overview

Dedicated Aides are assigned to work with a specific scholar(s) with a disability. They work to provide classroom-based support and intense case management to our students both in and outside of the general education setting. The support of the Dedicated Aide will allow scholars with disabilities to be educated alongside nondisabled scholars to the maximum extent appropriate. Dedicated Aides accompany the scholar to all classes during the school day, implement the scholar’s behavior plan, provide individualized attention and instruction during academic periods, and support them during other portions of the day, as determined by the Individualized Education Plan.

Some of the more common reasons for this type of support include (1) protection/safety of the scholar, (2) instructional support, (3) transition, and (4) reduction of anxiety for the scholar. Dedicated Aides carry out their responsibilities under the direct supervision of the Special Education leadership team. 

Our Summer Programs run from June 23rd to August 1st, Monday through Friday from 8 am - 1 pm. Teachers at MAPCS are expected to support the school-wide goals of emphasizing literacy and numeracy, helping students develop their critical thinking abilities, driving all students toward mastery and understanding, and helping students find their strengths and talents to use them to address weaknesses and overcome fears. There is an emphasis upon collecting and utilizing a broad range of data to drive instruction, upon weaving social justice themes into instructional content and assessment, and collaborative team teaching to meet the needs of all of our students. Students are engulfed in a blended learning program in which the traditional and digital methods of instruction are combined based upon the individual needs of students. In addition, MAPCS embraces a competency-based instructional program where students develop key skills and competencies to prepare them for postsecondary and career success. 

Requirements

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Travel to work in a timely manner
• Communicate appropriately with co-workers and special needs students
• Develop bonds with scholars and work with their parents
• Create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all students
• Use creativity to plan activities for students
• Model appropriate spoken and written language skills
• Coach assigned student in social problem solving, and appropriate behavior
• Work with assigned student on academic tasks specified in the daily lesson plan
• Collect observations and data on student learning and behavior
• Keep scholar information confidential by treating it with the strictest confidence and refraining from discussing the student outside of the school environment

Dedicated Aides support positive scholar behavior and classroom and school culture by:

o Implementing supports and consequences specified in the scholar’s Behavior Intervention Plan.

o Responding to scholar behavior using Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

o Dedicated Aides support youth’s safety and physical well-being during the school day by: ensuring that they are with the assigned youth during all hours specified on the IEP, including moving with the assigned youth to all locations, accompanying them within the school environment to ensure safety, and asking for help when a youth’s behavior threatens their own or other’s safety.

Qualification

• High School Diploma (required)
• Bachelor's Degree or pursuit of a bachelor’s degree (preferred)
• Tutoring experience
• Basic reading and math proficiency
• Basic people skills and ability to work with special needs students
• Basic knowledge of special education students
• A desire to develop a career within Maya Angelou Schools and the field of Education

Salary and Benefits

This role is temporary/seasonal. Compensation will be in the form of a daily rate of $150.00.
