Temporary Summer Assistant Teen Services

The temporary summer assistant role is a 10-week, 20-hours per week temporary position. The position pays $16.93 per hour. 

This position will assist in teen summer reading programming across the system, especially at the Plaza Branch, and will work with teens to create a welcoming environment and engaging programming. The Summer Assistant will work with the Teen Coordinating Librarian. 

Schedule: Tuesday - Thursday, with some weekend hours for 20 hours a week. The exact schedule would be determined between the supervisor and employee at the time of hire. 

Location

Plaza Branch: 4801 main St, KCMO, 64112.

Central Library: 14 West 10th Street, KCMO, 64105.

Job Duties (Essential Functions)

1. Encourage teens to participate in the summer reading program. This includes, but is not limited to, in-person engagement, registering through an online platform, and redeeming prizes in the library, in the community, and online. 
2. Coordinate with staff to help plan, set up, and provide engaging programming for teens at the Plaza Branch and across the system. This includes working with the teen advisory group and coordinating social media posts and videos.
3. Perform other duties specific to youth programming, including, but not limited to, assisting with outreach visits, special events, celebrations, or programs.
4. Assist branch staff in entering data into the online summer reading platform and maintaining accurate records.
5. Capture pictures and videos from summer events. 

1. Ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with patrons. 
2. Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and the public.
3. Basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
4. Willingness to be photographed and recorded for Library social media posts. 
5. Ability to work outdoors in variable summer weather conditions for up to four consecutive hours.
6. Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese. 
7. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience working/volunteering with children and teens.
• Community outreach and engagement. 
• Interest in STEAM, outdoor, and/or maker/craft activities.

Work Environment

Work is performed at a Library Branch. Workspace is shared with co-workers and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community
