City of Alton – Now Hiring: Soccer Referees

Season Dates: September 13th – November 7th
Pay: $15.00 – $25.00 per hour
Job Type: Seasonal
Location: In person at City of Alton fields and affiliated locations

Position Overview:
The Soccer Referee ensures safe, fair, and fun play by enforcing game rules and maintaining control of youth soccer games. Referees promote sportsmanship and a positive experience for all participants.

Schedule:

• Most games are on weekends between 8 am – 5 pm


• Some weeknight games available between 6 pm – 9 pm


• Evening and weekend availability required


• Schedules may vary based on league needs

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Officiate youth soccer games, enforcing rules consistently and respectfully


• Communicate clearly with players, coaches, and spectators


• Monitor gameplay and field conditions to ensure player safety


• Arrive punctually and prepared for each assigned game


• Handle disputes calmly and professionally; escalate issues as needed


• Maintain game documentation (scorecards, incident reports)


• Set up and break down equipment before and after games


• Promote sportsmanship and positive play


• Attend mandatory trainings and staff meetings


• Adhere to City of Alton Parks and Recreation policies and procedures


• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 16 years old (14 or 15 with a work permit)


• Prior experience officiating or participating in organized soccer is preferred


• Knowledge of youth soccer rules
  


• Ability to work independently and stay composed under pressure


• Certification in American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid is required within two months of employment
  

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

• Ability to run, jog, and stand for long periods on grass or turf


• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions


• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs


• Effective communication with players, coaches, and staff


• Visual and auditory ability to respond to game situations and emergencies
