The NSF Engineering Research Center for Advancing Sustainability through Powered Infrastructure for Roadway Electrification (ASPIRE) was established in 2020 with funding from NSF, DOE, DOT and additional federal and state agencies and industry partners. ASPIRE is the first of its kind in the world to take a holistic approach to eliminating range and charging as barriers for electrifying all vehicle classes, from passenger cars to heavy duty trucks. The approach is to pursue innovative wireless and plug-in charging and infrastructure solutions that bring the power to the vehicles—where they drive and park. EV users will no longer be concerned with when, where, or how they will charge, and EVs will be less expensive to purchase and operate than their gasoline and diesel counterparts.

Headquartered at USU, the center has more than 400 participants across 10 university campuses and global partnership with more than 60 industry and innovation partners in the related automotive, transportation, and electric utility industries. The center mission is to improve health and quality of life through intelligent and electrified transportation systems. Facilities at USU include the state-of-the-art Electric Vehicle and Roadway (EVR) test track and a new 25,000 square foot ASPIRE headquarters planned for completion in 2024.
