Job Description - Assistant Director of Curricular Innovation

Position Summary

The College of Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis seeks an experienced, interdisciplinary-minded, and collaborative colleague to serve in the newly created role of Assistant Director of Curricular Innovation. The Assistant Director works with and reports to the Director of Curricular Innovation, supporting the implementation of the Literacies for Life and Career (LLC) strategic initiative and contributing to teaching development efforts in Arts & Sciences. The position of Assistant Director supports excellence in undergraduate teaching and learning in Arts & Sciences by facilitating and helping to manage initiatives pertaining to curricular innovation, especially as articulated in the Arts & Sciences Strategic Plan. This is a time-limited position and is funded through June 30, 2029.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Facilitate implementation of Literacies for Life and Career initiative and provide ongoing pedagogical support to faculty in Arts & Sciences.

  • Work closely with the Director of Curricular Innovation, initiative co-leads, and Literacies team to successfully implement Literacies for Life and Career strategic initiative.
  • Assist with day-to-day management of the LLC early adopter pilot.
  • Provide guidance to faculty on integrating literacies into their courses, including specific pedagogical and course content integration through orientations, workshops, and individual consultations.
  • Develop learning modules and resources for faculty to assist them with the process of integrating Literacies into their courses, including Canvas guides, templates and samples of integration methods and activities.
  • Socialize the literacies and work of the early course adopters and other faculty through faculty learning communities, workshops, events, and retreats.
  • Assist with coordination and facilitation of faculty learning communities.
  • Develop and coordinate inclusive teaching practices, integrative modes of learning, and other strategic priorities in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Assess, document, evaluate, and communicate outcomes of Literacies for Life and Career.

  • Provide support on effective assessment methodology and direct measures of faculty experience, student learning, instrument design, student work samples, data analysis, and reporting for continuous improvement with regard to LLC.
  • Monitor faculty engagement with and professional development around integrating literacies into pedagogical practice and new course development for courses associated with the Literacies initiative.
  • Develop and administer surveys and focus groups to collect feedback from students, faculty, alumni, and campus partners.
  • Analyze and write reports on initiative activities and share reports with campus partners as needed.
  • Engage in grant writing for research opportunities related to pedagogical assessment.

Collaborate with Literacies leadership, A&S faculty, and campus partners and contribute to on-going communication efforts.

  • Build strong relationships with A&S departments and programs.
  • Collaborate closely with key partners, including but not limited to Student Academic Affairs in A&S, the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Center for Career Engagement, and A&S education technology staff.
  • Work collaboratively with the LLC team to write and edit communications, including website content, emails to stakeholders, reports and updates on LLC activities, research reports, and other written communications.
  • Present on LLC to university stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in liberal arts discipline.
  • Teaching experience in a liberal arts discipline.
  • Curriculum development experience.
  • Learning management course development experience.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, and administration.
  • Experience with design and development of faculty resources.
  • Faculty development experience, including workshops, orientations, training sessions, and 1:1 consultations.
  • Knowledge of liberal arts curricula and of concepts, practices, and procedures related to undergraduate education.
  • Demonstrated expertise in teaching at the university level.
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies.
  • Project management skills with the ability to meet deadlines with varying degrees of pressure.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and consensus-driven environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and move along institutional initiatives with little supervision.
  • Mixed methods research (quantitative and qualitative, or at least one of these).
  • Assessment and data management skills.
  • Grant writing and administration experience.
  • Student academic advising.

Required Qualifications

Masterâ™s degree in related field and three years related experience.

G11

Salary Range

$52,000.00 - $88,800.00 / Annually The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
