The Department of Management Services (DMS) is a customer-oriented agency responsible for managing the various business and workforce-related functions of state government. Under the direction of Governor Ron DeSantis and DMS’ Executive Leadership Team, the agency oversees the real estate, procurement, human resources, group insurance, retirement, technology, telecommunications, private prisons, fleet, and federal property assistance programs utilized throughout Florida’s state government. Division of Retirement:
The mission of the Division of Retirement is to deliver a high quality, innovative, and cost-effective retirement system. The division currently has 225 full-time retirement staff and manages a 2022-23 (alternatively, “an”) operating budget of $45.1 million and a non-operating budget of $24.8 billion. The division administers the Florida Retirement System (FRS) Pension Plan, currently the fourth largest state retirement system in the US with more than 2.6 million active, retired, and terminated vested and non-vested members and $181 billion in assets. The division pays out $12.5 billion a year in retiree benefits and maintains the service history, vesting and membership status records, and collects nearly $4.5 billion annually in employer and employee contributions from more than 1,000 employers for all FRS members. The Work You Will Do:
As a Benefits Specialist, you will be responsible interpreting and applying applicable laws, rules, and regulations necessary to administer the survivor benefit provisions for FRS benefits. Review and process retirement applications for survivors, beneficiary designation forms, and other documents for survivor benefit accounts. The Difference You Will Make:

Audit and reconcile retirement data to ensure data integrity and accurately calculate death benefits. Determine survivor benefits or Health Insurance Subsidy (HIS) eligibility based on analysis of plan membership, beneficiary designations, service credit, and option selection.
Provide customer service by phone, email, or personal interviews with families of deceased members, agencies, and attorneys. Compose complete, accurate, and grammatically correct correspondence, in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
Complete reports and proof of life projects in a timely manner. Use proof of life project data to verify continued eligibility for benefits. May serve on committees and in workgroups to improve or maintain bureau or division wide administration of the retirement system.
Perform other duties as required. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

A bachelor's degree from a college or university and 1 year of professional experience in the area of insurance , retirement or social security, administration, call center, customer service, fiscal work, statistics, personnel, or any combination thereof. Professional experience in the areas described or any combination of the above can substitute on a year-for year basis for the required college education. Special Notes:
