Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor or lead direction from a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker, incumbent will operate all types of highway maintenance equipment. You will be working on the striping, button, stencil, or sign crew. This is a traveling crew and may be required to travel up to 75% of the time. Employee will operate vehicles requiring a Class "A" driver's license with tank endorsement and operate and service specified equipment used in highway maintenance of striping, raised pavement markings, stencils, signs, or emergency service. When not operating the specified equipment, may perform any of the duties outlined under CHMW or CLMW, and do other related work. Employee may also be assigned to perform non-equipment operation duties normally assigned to other classifications as part of their normal assignment. Must be able to do heavy manual labor, including routinely lifting 50 lbs or more in order to load materials and require long periods of driving or standing dependent on assignments, along with storm water related activities in support of the Department's storm water pollution prevention program.

Working Conditions

This position is located in Fresno County


Incumbent will be required to work outside in all kinds of weather and subject to environmental conditions. The work is physically demanding and requires stamina and agility. In addition, the job will require incumbent to work on or near roadways with vehicular traffic as well as working with and around heavy equipment, hot and/or pressurized materials/chemicals used for highway work. To help with operational needs, incumbent may be asked to work weekends and alternate work shifts such as but not limited to 9/80, 4/10, or night work, including weekends and holidays, after hours, and subject to call-outs.

*Mandatory night sign inspections start each year on April 1.  

May be assigned to Snow Territory

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid unrestricted Class A commercial driver’s license, with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.

  • The position(s) may require medical and/or audio evaluation clearance prior to being hired.

Candidates that believe they meet the minimum qualifications based on a pattern of education from the classification description (specifications) must provide a copy of their degree, transcripts, license, and/or certificate, along with the State application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position.
