About the Department:

The Classification and Compensation Department is within NC State University Human Resources and is responsible for administering, overseeing, and managing the classification systems and compensation programs as well as the administration and oversight of federal regulations and state policies for University positions subject to and exempt from the NC State Human Resources Act (SHRA and EPS positions). The department is also responsible for developing, monitoring and maintaining compensation programs and initiatives for Faculty, EPS and Senior Academic and Administrative Officers.

Essential Job Duties:

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a strategic partner to campus through the administration of University classification and compensation programs that support the strategic goals and objectives of NC State. Primary responsibilities include EPS and SHRA job analysis, design, and classification; compensation analysis, consultation, and statistical analyses; and interpretation and application of NC State HR policies/procedures, related UNC System and Office of State HR policies, and federal regulations/laws. Position establishes and maintains credible, collaborative relationships on campus and consults with administrators, managers, and college/unit HR representatives regarding the administration of SHRA and EPS classification and compensation. Provides reliable and insightful guidance on position design and the use of SHRA and EPS titles and compensation practices and trends. This involves providing strategic direction to campus in regards to their human resource long range planning. Provides analysis and reporting on salary actions for the UNC System Office, for OSHR, and for NC State. Communication
Position requires excellent written and verbal communications skills. Work involves sensitive and/or controversial issues, requiring tact and diplomacy to address. Position recommends best practices and/or decisions dictated by law/policy to ensure compliance for the University. This person will collaborate with peer groups internal and external to Human Resources as well as serve on campus committees charged to address issues affecting classification and compensation policies, procedures, and administration. Professional and Organizational Knowledge
The position will require the use of professional and organizational knowledge in the majority of its duties including job analysis and classification, job design, compensation, and organizational design and/or restructuring. The position will serve as a liaison and consultant for campus. A thorough knowledge and application of state and federal policy, laws and regulations governing personnel and compensation matters is needed to perform the responsibilities. In addition, the incumbent must have thorough knowledge of the University’s organizational structures, protocols, complex institutional funding variations, and HR best practices. Project Management
The position will coordinate a variety of projects that will require establishing project objectives, tasks, and timelines and facilitating project team work. The position will participate in project goals, new initiatives and organizational studies some of which will have university-wide scope. Position must handle urgent requests and periods of sustained high volume based on institutional priorities and academic cycle. This position is responsible for conducting faculty and EPS salary bench-marking studies among peer institutions; performing complex faculty and EHRA non-faculty salary analysis. The incumbent will plan, develop, and present a variety of training regarding policies, procedures, and best practices related to human resources administration, position classification, and compensation. Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of progressively responsible experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting HR best practices in the context of organizational goals and objectives; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in job analysis for a variety of occupational fields, compensation principles and techniques, job design, organizational design, statistical analysis, salary surveys, and project management.
  • Proficient knowledge and application of Excel.
  • Demonstrated skills in collaboration, consensus building, and communicating complex concepts in an easy to understand way.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Job analysis, compensation, and statistical analysis experience preferably in a university setting and/or large organization.
  • Experience in organizational development/design.
  • Experience using a sophisticated enterprise-based Human Resources Information Management System (i.e. PeopleSoft) and Talent Management/Applicant Tracking System (i.e. PeopleAdmin, PeopleClick).
