Job Description - Dean of Students [Boston Green Academy]

Boston Green Academy, an innovative "in-district" charter school within the Boston Public Schools, is seeking to hire committed, skilled, and inspiring educators. BGA is committed to preparing all students-particularly those who struggle-to succeed in college and 21 st century careers and to be leaders in the sustainability of our community and world. Located in the historic Taft Building in Brighton, BGA serves over 500 students in grades 6-12. Teachers and Staff Members at Boston Green Academy will:
  • Focus intensely on increasing student achievement and life opportunities for all students, especially those who are at-risk or off-track
  • Embrace BGA's mission as a green school by incorporating school-wide green principles into their classes and participating actively in work to build a successful sustainable school for our students
  • Create inspiring, challenging, and effective teaching and learning experiences for all our students
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers and school leadership to build the school from the ground up
  • Share in the leadership of the school by taking on essential roles in addition to teaching
  • Be committed to serving all students, including English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities, in a maximum inclusion setting

  • Enjoy and thrive in the lively and diverse world of urban adolescents while striving to create a model of public education that serves them well
Job Responsibilities
The Dean of Students at Boston Green Academy will:
  • Serve as a member of the Head of School Cabinet and a lead member of the BGA staff and Student Support Team, with a focus on student safety, support and discipline
  • Help lead the Student Support Team to develop positive, engaging programs and activities at BGA that promote our Safety Guidelines, our "green" theme, and activities that support our students to thrive in society
  • Manage, supervise and evaluate the school's Community Field Coordinators and Security Paraprofessionals to ensure the safety of the BGA community while building a positive, inclusive and restorative justice-based school culture
  • Assist the Assistant Head of School in the overall operations of the school, which include but are not limited to:
    • the opening of school on a daily basis
    • staffing of all school administrative roles, including hallways, lunch periods, and after school monitoring
    • support for and supervision of all Community Field Coordinators and SST members as needed
  • Lead, manage and o versee all aspects of student discipline at BGA including: ensuring the BPS Code of Conduct is implemented with fidelity, including protecting the due process rights of students, families, and staff; tracking discipline referrals from teachers and preparing and analyzing data; creating intervention strategies and follow-up plans; and maintaining appropriate student discipline records
  • Work collaboratively with Community Field Coordinators to establish consistent protocols and procedures to respond to disruptions to learning
  • Collaborate with SST team to create and maintain intervention plans that support students' re-engagement in learning and capacity to build positive relationships with community members
  • Lead the school's staff to establish and maintain a positive, safe, and respectful culture/climate at BGA that emphasizes restorative justice, alternatives to suspension, preventive school culture work, and BGA's mission and values.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/caregivers/families of students to support positive behaviors from students
  • Lead the Community Field Coordinators and the Asst. Head of School with school discipline, related processes and paperwork, and alternative discipline initiatives to support student attendance and engagement in learning
  • Serve as a Hearing Officer for infractions of the BGA Code of Conduct and as liaison to BPS in all matters regarding student conduct, including working directly with BPS Operational Leaders, School Safety personnel, Boston Police, and any other agency involved in safety and school discipline matters.
  • Prepare all bullying reports, equity reports, long-term suspension and expulsion hearing forms and CIC packets for Head of School approval
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Support to support students proactively and in keeping with BGA's commitment to restorative justice; help lead and support the RJ work at BGA
  • Serve as a member of the Administrative and Leadership Teams, bringing a student safety and support lens to our discussions and decisions
  • Serve as mentor or our students as a facilitator of a student support group; participation in BGA Project Week events and other student events as needed or required
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Head of School

  • Ability to collaborate, work well under pressure, and maintain a sense of humor and humility
  • Impeccable ethics
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with diverse students, staff, partners, and families
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive and lead in a multicultural atmosphere where respect and ethical behavior are pervasive
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and organizational skills
Required:
  • Minimum of 5 years at an urban school in a role directly working with students
  • Demonstrated success working with Youth of Color in a school setting
  • Experience with BPS Code of Conduct and strong ability to implement it fairly and faithfully
Compensation:
  • All teachers and staff at BGA will receive excellent salaries and benefits as employees of the Boston Public Schools with stipends available for additional responsibilities
  • Terms for this position: Managerial, Tier C (Coordinator), Full-time, 12 Months
