Job Description

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality didactic instruction in the classroom and/or the online environment using Blackboard as the student learning management system
  • Create opportunities for students and other members of our community to feel connected, respected, accepted, and valued in the learning space and curricula
  • Provide professional mentorship and academic advisement to MSHI students through special events, office hours and/or scheduled appointments
  • Challenge existing biases and disparities that serve as barriers to success in coursework, leadership, and professional development for students
  • Develop and refine courses and syllabi, and ensure practical assessments of course learning outcomes
  • Teach with innovative and contemporary approaches, including testing and evaluating new methods, seeking updated texts and readings, and developing new or progressive assignments
  • Conduct routine assessments of teaching and learning and make recommendations for improvements aligned with program, school, and university learning outcomes
  • Engage in scholarship commensurate with assigned faculty rank and in support of the health informatics program, school, and University
  • Participate in school and university-wide committees, including the school curriculum committee, academic standing review, and others as assigned
  • Represent the school, informatics program, and the profession to external audiences, including potential students, parents, employers, and industry partners

 

Additional teaching responsibilities may be assigned

Requirements

Required:
• Masters in health informatics, computer science, or health – related field;
• Excellent organizational and communication skills;
• Experience teaching online (asynchronous) in a professionally and/or regionally accredited program;
• Experience with cultural and social needs of graduate students, including first-generation students;
• Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment;
• Ability to work independently and effectively interact with various parties at all levels (students, faculty, administration/staff, alumni, and external constituents, including healthcare industry professionals).

 

Preferred Qualifications:
• A doctorate in health informatics, or related field;
• Minimum two years of work experience in healthcare setting
• More than five years of teaching experience in a professionally and/or regionally accredited program;
• AHIMA Certification (CCS/CCA/RHIA, etc.) or qualified to obtain certification;
• Demonstrated experience with healthcare technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation;
• Expertise in teaching technological applications;
• Knowledge of CAHIIM accreditation requirements;
• Willingness to participate in international travel to support SHB travel seminars.

 

Physical Requirements:
• Use of a computer to conduct classroom instruction, record sessions, and attend meetings with students, staff, and administration;
• Ability to participate in and produce self via videoconference, or other university-provided means
• The incumbent must be able to travel to campus regularly;
• Must be able to utilize technology in teaching and delivering education, including recording lectures, posting videos, and using the LMS and tools provided for grading and giving feedback to students.
