Position Summary

Responsible for obtaining, processing, sorting and distributing mail and/or packages to the campus as well as providing customer service. Primary focus may be in a mail room on a shipping/receiving dock or operating a meter.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with campus partners such as USPS, FedEx, UPS and Amazon as well as campus departments to intake mail and/or packages each day.   Accuracy, efficiency and teamwork are all critical success factors as the volume is significant.
  • Process intake for each item. Unload, scan, sort and shelve packages for pickup, delivery to customers or placement in lockers.   Count and sort mail.   Weigh, scan and sort metered items .
  • Process outgoing items by delivering mail and/or packages or locate and scan each package that customers come to pick up. Carry a valid driverâ™s license at all times. Must observe all posted speed limits and drive no faster than 10 MPH in areas where there are none posted.
  • Provide customer service to staff, faculty and/or students who need help finding or mailing/shipping items.   Verify proper identification, obtaining signatures on handheld units, uploading signatures to the master database.
  • Provide timely look-up functions for mail and/or packages using University and industry-specific software. Assist in maintaining accurate names and addresses in the mail forwarding system while complying with US Postal mail processing forwarding guidelines.
  • Demonstrate safety protocols at all times and attend regular trainings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Dust, dirt, grease or other disagreeable elements.
  • Ability to travel to various on- and off-campus locations.
  • Ability to lift and handle up to 70 pounds.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and or bend for prolonged periods of time.
  • Heavy equipment (buffers, mowers, forklift, etc.).
  • Operate motor vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience working in a mail, shipping or receiving center.
  • Familiarity with the campus, culture and mission.
  • A Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D driverâ™s license may be required within the first two weeks of employment.
  • Demonstrate basic computer knowledge including emailing, using MS Word.
  • Ability and desire to learn industry specific software.
  • Ability to use applicable equipment to log trackable envelopes and packages.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to interact well with students, parents, faculty, staff and coworkers.
  • Desire to work on continuous process improvements, optimize speed and efficiency in operation and minimize customer wait time.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.
  • One year of prior experience working in a mail, shipping or receiving center, customer service, University operations, or similar role.
  • Driver's license.
  • Safe driving record. The University will check driving record approximately once per year.

Salary Range

$16.08 - $21.47 / Hourly The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
