Job Description - Manager, Appropriations

The National Urban League seeks a dedicated   Manager, Appropriations to join our Washington Bureau, reporting directly to the Vice President for Appropriations and Advancement. The Manager will assist on a high impact portfolio of matters connected with our appropriations and advocacy work in Washington, DC. 

  • Monitor and write memos on congressional appropriations and budget hearings, markups, and Floor proceedings.
  • Review and provide detailed summaries/analysis on relevant legislation.
  • Assist with preparing advocacy materials for members of the Administration, Congress, staff, corporate partners, and other advocacy organizations.
  • Assist in outreach to our affiliate network.
  • Attend briefings and meetings held by other advocacy organizations, Congress, and the Administration and share updates with the Washington Bureau team.
  • Assist in the tracking of funding levels for agencies and programs of particular interest to the Urban League movement, including research into past funding.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

 

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience with appropriations/budget issues, for example, through work in a Congressional office and/or Agency Budget office or Congressional Affairs office.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Prior experience researching and analyzing legislative language.
  • An interest in working for a mission-oriented civil rights organization.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to perform accurate research and analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, and commitment to working with a team.
  • This position is hybrid

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifteen pounds at times.
