Job Description - Manager- AZIM Operations, Amazon Linehaul

Description

The Amazon Intermodal ( AZIM ) team is seeking someone for the role of Manager – AZIM Internal Operations. This role will be responsible for leading and developing a team of transportation specialists and managers in the daily execution of pick ups and deliveries while driving a long-term operations strategy to support our significant growth. You will have an opportunity to be an expert and work with a group of talented program managers, product managers, research scientists, software developers, and business leaders to provide insights that shape our network for weeks and years to come. This role will be involved in all aspects of the intermodal (IM) business and requires a leader with learning agility and desire to work cross functionally with both internal and external organizations. The AZIM Internal Operations Manager will oversee team growth exceeding 20% in the coming year, drive a 30% efficiency gain, and will inherit 60+ employees. The Manager ensures the end to end operational execution of loads shipped on Amazon’s 1P IM network, driving Amazon Transportation network growth and facilitating planned cost margins, driving network balance and overall network health.

The Internal Manager owns analyzing and continuously improving all operational KPIs and initiatives related to the AZIM network within a series of accounts. This leader works closely with stakeholders across the AZIM Program to ensure that the actual execution of the AZIM Operation matches the planned impact. The person in this role must earn trust and partner across multiple business units at Amazon to align on prioritization, defect reduction, business operations, and team engagement. The Manager drives operational excellence and ensures the actual operational costs of the program via adherence to on-time pickup and delivery, dwell and delay management, storage, and waybilling impacts. The Manager oversees the complex supply chain impact of thousands of units moving through rail ramps and Amazon sites.

Our vision remains to make Amazon’s intermodal program the default mode choice for shipments greater than 500 miles and a viable alternative on lanes less than 500 miles for both Amazon internal and external shippers. To do so, we need a rigorous 1P external product that can compete with 3P IMCs who have favorable rail rates from long running relationships with Class 1 railroads, spanning several decades.

-Lead and Develop a team of managers and specialists responsible for delivering best in class intermodal service.

-Develop and implement a strategic operations strategy in support of key business objectives.

-Work across stakeholder teams in finance, drayage, volume planning, network design, equipment and tech to deliver low cost high value Intermodal service in support of team objectives.

-Engage with external rail and dray partners to identify and remove operational barriers.

-Oversee all 1P Intermodal network shipments – tactical management of pickups, deliveries and in-transit disruptions.

-Provide network guidance to internal and external stakeholders on daily freight movement to Amazon FCs (fulfillment centers) and rail terminals

-Provide transit and mode recommendations to IM (Intermodal) Planning and Strategy teams based on network health.

-Work with stakeholders to improve IM external operations through managing Performance (On Time Deliver and On-Time Pickup), Delays, and Dwells

-Implement and drive the utilization of people and operational metrics to increase efficiency of the growing IM external program

-Identify, develop, manage and execute analyses to uncover areas of opportunity and present written business recommendations

-Design exception based reporting highlighting and analyzing outlier/ trends that drive performance and operational improvement, along with weekly reporting and taking actions to address newly found issues.

-Pull and manipulate large amounts of data to identify and mitigate defects through detailed analysis.

-Gain a deep understanding of various business lines and related processes, to understand long and short term needs to support business growth.

-Work autonomously in an ambiguous environment, seeking to understand business problems, automation limitations, scaling factors and boundaries.

The Manager – IM Internal Operations will have the opportunity to support and drive the expansion of a complex start-up type operation that is rapidly scaling to large impact across the Amazon Transportation network. You will initially focus on operational rigor and identifying process requirements but will rapidly transition to developing detailed plans in support of continued growth.

Basic Qualifications

- 5+ years of working cross functionally with tech and non-tech teams experience

- 5+ years of team management experience

- 5+ years of cross functional project delivery experience

- 5+ years of program or project management experience

- 2+ years of supply chain experience

- Experience defining program requirements and using data and metrics to determine improvements

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience managing, analyzing and communicating results to senior leadership
