Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
The Medical Assistant Certified is a multi-skilled clinical professional that provides indirect and/or direct patient care within the scope of practice and in alignment with the standards of excellence and quality. Under the direction of the provider, the Medical Assistant contributes to the completion of the patient’s chief complaint (including, but not limited, to respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature), documents patient/family needs, participates in planning and implementing care for patients, and administers ordered medications (oral, injection, topically, etc.) within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.
Essential Job Functions
Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following (required):
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting, Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); National Healthcareer Association (NHA); Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NCRMA); National Association for Health Professionals, National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
If incumbent is unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in the state of South Carolina)
BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (preferred upon hire, required prior to independent patient care)
Education
High School/GED (required)
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education (preferred, but required in South Carolina)
Work Experience
Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred)
1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred)

Medical Assistant Job Description
Job Summary:
Provide patient care in outpatient physician practice under the direction of the practicing MD, APP or RN. Responsible for staging patients in preparation to see providers. Update all patient medications in the medication history at each visit. Perform patient related tasks as directed by practice providers. Facilitate the timely communication of clinical advice to patients electronically or by phone as directed by practice providers. Ensure all needed medical records are available to care teams and providers prior to patient’s office visit. Coordinate with other team members to provide exceptional patient service. Assist with other clinical and clerical duties to ensure optimization of patient experience within the practice. The Medical Assistant should be proficient with the practice management software and the electronic health record (EHR).
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Successful completion of accredited Medical Assistant training program required for external applicants. Internal applicants not currently in this same job title who have successfully completed the RSFH Medical Assistant Training Program and passed the CMA certification exam as well as Medical Assistant candidates processed through an organizational acquisition, are considered grandfathered into the Medical Assistant title for the purpose of initial placement. One-year office experience/experience in a physician practice environment or other similar heath care setting preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
Must have a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card.
Teammates newly hired into this position will have 6 months from the date of hire to complete their CMA certification from a certifying board approved by the Board of Medical Examiners. Internal Medical Assistant Apprentice transfers into this position will have 18 months from the date of hire to obtain their education from a credentialed CMA program; they will then be eligible to transfer into a Certified Medical Assistant position.

Knowledge/Skills: Strong patient-centered focus. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public. Ability to organize and manage competing priorities. Ability to problem solve and show good judgment. Record vital signs on all patients at every visit according to practice protocols. Phlebotomy skills preferred. Basic skill with computer keyboard, data entry functions and various software programs, e.g, Word and Internet applications.
Other: Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.

Work Demands/Environment:
Physical demands require full range of body motion, eye-hand coordination and corrected vision and hearing. Extensive standing and walking. Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, calculator, telephone, copier, fax and other office equipment as necessary. The position requires sitting at a c0omputer to view and type patient medical record data. The work environment is subject to possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances and other possible effects in an occupational health practice.
