Mental Health Specialist II

Position Summary:

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Specialist II for the Inpatient Serivces Department within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care. The primary purpose of the Partial Hospital Mental Health Specialist II position is to provide daily direct care services to the program's clients as directed by the unit supervisor. Provides appropriate assistance and renders service in accordance with UBHC policies and procedures in a culturally competent and Person Centered manner. Actively participates in crisis interventions. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Engages consumer/patient in appropriate interventions based on service plan.
• Interacts and communicates with individuals served in a wellness and recovery focused manner.
• Responds to crisis situations utilizing UBHC endorsed crisis intervention techniques/skills.
• Organizes, prepares materials and leads groups and therapeutic activities.
• Assists with ADL's, encouraging independent behavior.
• Initiates activities, facilitates and monitors unit milieu; reports changes to clinical staff/unit administration.

Minimum Education and Experience:

• Four (4) years of full-time paid experience in an appropriate mental health or human services field or a bachelor's degree in a relevant mental health or human services field.  
• Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Must be able to lift up to seventy (70) pounds multiple times a day. Requires bending, lifting, sitting. Time spent in a school environment. Some travel to client homes and community agencies. WORK ENVIRONMENT : Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic). Program and classroom setting is active and sometimes noisy. Varied settings in home. Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic). Subject to unpredictable situations, patient crisis, both medical and psychiatric. Occasionally exposed to consumers exhibiting assaultive behaviors. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens that require use of personal protective equipment. May be exposed to varying or extreme temperatures.
