Job Description - Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Managing Director of Development

POSITION TITLE: Managing Director of Development- 1.0 FTE
CLASSIFICATION: 97174A- Gift Officer 4A
REPORTS TO:  Director of Advancement

SALARY RANGE (minimum to midpoint) $115,735 - $144,669/yr Overview 
The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretumâ™s Development team is one of four teams in the Advancement Department deepening constituent relationships with the Arboretum. The Managing Director of Development reports to the Director of Advancement / Lead Development Officer (LDO), serves on the advancement leadership team and supervises the development team. The advancement leadership team includes the supervisors of four teams: development, marketing and communications, membership and gift administration, as well as the Advancement Director. The Managing Director serves as a trusted advisor to the Advancement Director and provides visible leadership across the advancement team.

The development team includes major giving, annual giving, grant writing, memorial and tribute giving, planned giving, donor events, relations and stewardship. The Managing Director provides oversight, mentorship, and support for eight development team members, six of whom are direct reports. In addition, the Managing Director manages a portfolio of donors and prospects capable of making major gifts to the Arboretum, in line with current metrics for this position.

Our Team Mission: The Development Team supports the Arboretumâ™s mission by deepening relationships and aligning donor passions with the Arboretumâ™s financial goals.

Job Duties 
Portfolio management (50%) 
● Working closely with the Advancement Director, maintain responsibility for a major gifts portfolio with a focus on top individual and corporate prospects. Utilize various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts
● Document portfolio management activities in the University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) CRM - DMS 
● Communicate with gift administration regarding processes and recording Arboretum gifts in the Arboretumâ™s CRM 
● Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations as assigned 
● Involve the Advancement Director, Executive Director and program staff in donor cultivation strategies and visits as appropriate, supporting their activities through providing thorough briefings, talking points, and itineraries 
● Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the University and the donor's satisfaction with the institution

Development Leadership (25%) 
● Develop and implement a plan to grow annual, major and planned gift production 
● Supervise major gift fundraising team of four major gift officers (including one grant writer) 
● Provide leadership and strategic planning direction for major gift efforts to increase all prospect qualification, expand donor counts and grow solicitation activities in major and principal gifts 
● In consultation with Advancement Director, set individual gift officer goals and monitor progress against annual gift officer performance metrics 
● Assist and advise gift officers on proposal development and other development best practices 
● Oversee the donor stewardship, annual giving and tribute gift leads and provide strategic direction 
● Work closely with membership, gift administration, and marketing / communications to ensure seamless integration of development efforts with the rest of advancement

Strategic Leadership (25%) 
● Participate in and provide strong leadership for development strategic planning, including campaign assessment and execution 
● Demonstrate strong, visible leadership in the advancement leadership team, the advancement department and the Arboretum 
● As directed by the Advancement Director, effectively manage assignments related to the Arboretum Foundationâ™s Board of Trustees 
● Working closely with the Advancement Director, develop and monitor the annual operating budget 
● Represent the development team to create CRM strategies and resolve issues

Minimum / Essential Qualifications (must be mentioned on application/resume)
● Bachelorâ™s degree 
● Five years demonstrated success soliciting major gifts 
● Experience leading, supervising, or managing development teams or programs 
● Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to articulate a strong and compelling case for support

Preferred Qualifications 
● Experience soliciting principal gifts of $1,000,000+ 
● Experience working in higher education 
● Capital campaign experience 
● Experience working for a nature-based organization 
● Experience working with philanthropic volunteer boards
