Job Description - Physical Therapist Assistant

Assist physical therapists in carrying out complex procedures and programs. Perform routine treatment procedures in accordance with established protocols. Instruct patients in physical therapy activities, including use of equipment and home exercise program. Observe and report patient conditions; document treatment programs and patient progress. Conduct Biodex isokinetic testing and evaluation. Participate in casting and orthotic fabrication using plaster and aquaplast techniques. Participate in teaching PTA students as necessary.

  • Provide treatment under the supervision of a Physical Therapist, following focused treatment plans based on established goals.
  • Monitors patient?s response to treatment and modifies treatment and/or reports patient?s response to the Physical Therapist as appropriate.
  • Completes patient care and billing documentation according to established procedures.
  • Assist Physical Therapists in carrying out complex procedures and programs.
  • Instruct patients in physical therapy activities and in the use of equipment.
  • Attend meetings to report on patient progress.
  • Identify the need for home treatment programs; plan and instruct the patient and family / caregivers in home treatment programs.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new staff and volunteers
  • Supervise physical therapy assistant students.
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.
  • Associates degree in a Physical Therapy Assistant approved program is mandatory.
  • Current licensure as a Physical Therapy Assistant in the State of Michigan is necessary.
  • Knowledge of durable medical equipment, orthotic and lower extremity evaluations, bracing and casting of orthopaedic injuries.
  • Current CPR and first aid certification.
  • One to two years of orthopaedic/sports experience is preferred.

Physical Therapist Assistant license from the State of Michigan is required.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
