Job Description - Physical Therapist - Urgent

Job Summary The primary purpose of this position is be responsible for directing and providing physical therapy evaluation and treatment, education, and consultation for the program to improve the health and wellbeing of patient relatives through the prevention and treatment of disease, disability and injury. The position requires the ability to work with great autonomy, balance activities, organize work, set priorities and delegate tasks, meet deadlines, analyze organizational problems, and develop and implement effective solutions. Oyate Health Center is an outpatient ambulatory clinic with a full range of services that provides for a population of approximately 22,000 Native Americans. Essential Functions

  • Responsible for a high degree of professional competence, skill and judgment in assessment, planning and carrying out the full range of treatment modalities, patient relative education and discharge planning of a variety of outpatient situations. Treatment objectives range from routine to complex and procedures involve application of highly specialized skills and knowledge.
  • Provides technical supervision and input for performance plans and performance ratings for technicians and PTA(s).
  • Provides consultation to medical or clinical staff on matters pertaining to physical therapy and/or patient relative progress. Incumbent exercises tact, good judgment and persuasiveness when dealing with these individuals.
  • The employee may have the authority to act for the department head in his/her absence. Assists the supervisor and staff in all aspects of rehabilitation services, administrative tasks, and projects as assigned.
  • Participates in the organization, planning, and execution of specialty programs/clinics and research efforts to meet the needs of the patient relatives and department.
  • Demonstrates competency and skill in the use of personal computers and a variety of job-related software applications. Appropriately utilizes and manages the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Must comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervisory Controls This is an advanced clinical professional that receives administrative direction from their supervisor with assignments in terms of broadly defined goals or functions. The employee usually has responsibility for independently planning, designing, and carrying out programs, projects, studies, or other work. Results of the work are considered technically authoritative review concerns such matters as fulfillment of program objectives, effect of advice and influence on the overall program, or the contribution to the advancement of technology. Recommendations for new projects and alteration of objectives usually are evaluated for such considerations as availability of funds and other resources, broad program goals, or established priorities. Guidelines Guidelines include state and federal laws and regulations, OHC policies and procedures, OHC Medical Staff Bylaws, professional standards of medical practice, medical standing orders, and Centers or Medicare and Medicaid Services Conditions of Participation manual. These guidelines are not applicable to every situation encountered and require independent judgment, selection and interpretation in application. Guidelines include GPTLHB, OHC, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, and deviations must be authorized by the supervisor.


Complexity/Scope of Work The work typically includes varied duties that require many different and unrelated processes and methods, such as those relating to well established aspects of an administrative or professional field. Decisions regarding what needs to be done include the assessment of unusual circumstances, variations in approach, and incomplete or conflicting data. The continuous changes in healthcare and treatment options contributes to the complexity of the position.


The work involves establishing criteria; formulating projects; assessing program effectiveness; or investigating or analyzing a variety of unusual conditions, problems, or questions. The work product or service affects a wide range of organizational activities, major financial activities, or the operation of other programs divisions of the organization. This level of scope and effect is typically representative of specialized clinical and technical professional positions within the organization. Contacts Contacts are typically with clinical providers, patients/family members, employees, community resources agencies, carious health Departments, Tribal Health Programs, and the general public. Contacts are primarily for obtaining, furnishing, exchanging and providing factual medical information. Work Environment/Physical Demands The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields. The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity. The employee must be able to read, write, speak and hear. The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking; use hands and fingers to manipulate, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee occasionally lifts light objects and distinguishes between shades of color. The work is typically performed in a clinic setting which requires normal safety precaution for infection control and environmental safety measures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Supervisory and Management Responsibility This position has responsibility for the oversite of performance for assistant staff. The employee carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include participation in interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. The employee will have authority to act for the department head in his/her absence. Education/Experience/Certificates/Credentials Minimum Qualifications:
  • Advanced clinical professional position requiring post-secondary education and/or considerable experience.
  • Doctorate degree from a CAPTE accredited school of Physical Therapy.
OR
  • Master's degree from a CAPTE accredited school of Physical Therapy with five (5) years of work experience.
OR
  • Bachelor's degree from a CAPTE accredited school of Physical Therapy and seven (7) years of progressively responsible relevant experience.
AND
  • Must successfully pass a criminal and background check, and a pre-employment drug screen.
