What You'll Do:

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Formulates, develops, and implements policy for Dyslexia Legislation;
  • Convenes and works with cross Department staff to coordinate policy and guidance to ensure consistency across Department policies related to the dyslexia support laws;
  • Independently answers complex and/or confidential correspondence;
  • Serves as liaison between districts, the Department and the Ohio Dyslexia Committee;
  • Transmits decisions and directives, represents the Department at stakeholder meetings and conferences.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to school districts in the implementation of Ohio’s Dyslexia Support Laws and other early literacy policies:

  • Provides technical advice to aid administrators in decision making;
  • Researches and responds to constituent inquiries and complaints;
  • Provides information and explains programs to public;
  • Collaborates with other state agencies, parent and professional organizations/associations and school district personnel to ensure technical assistance and professional development initiatives are appropriate and focused on improving results;
  • Coordinates the Request for Qualifications process for assessment and professional development vendors with the Ohio Dyslexia Committee and the Office of Assessment;
  • Maintains the approved list of dyslexia screener assessments and professional development providers;
  • Collaborates with the Office for Exceptional Children and the Office of Assessment to develop guidance for districts, respond to stakeholder inquiries and serve on necessary workgroups;
  • Collaborate with staff and leadership from the Office of Accountability and EMIS to develop guidance and business rules for district data reporting.
  • Support and facilitate the work of the Ohio Dyslexia Committee
  • Provides guidance and support for policies that overlap with Ohio’s Dyslexia Support Laws (i.e. Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Ohio’s Phonics Requirements, Reading Achievement Plans, and HB 33 Science of Reading initiatives.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


At least 72 months of experience in any combination of the following:

1. Working in an educational setting (i.e., pre-k-12) with an emphasis on evidence-based language and literacy instruction, grounded in the science of reading working as a teacher, intervention specialist or reading/literacy specialist.

2. Working in an educational setting (i.e., pre-k-12, higher education) with an emphasis on evidence-based language and literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading working in one of the following capacities: literacy coach, educational administration, administrator with experience in development of district/school-wide curriculum/assessments, professional development provider, speech and language pathologist.

3. working in a government and/or educational setting: designing professional development in dyslexia or structured literacy, developing educational policy or developing assessment/evaluation.

4. Structured Literacy Classroom Teacher Certification or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completed an IDA Accredited or IDA Accredited Plus professional development course in dyslexia.
  • Completed a dyslexia training course fulfilling Ohio’s Dyslexia Support Law’s professional development requirements for educators.
  • 3 years providing intervention to children at risk for or having been identified as having dyslexia, Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist Certification or equivalent.
