Job Title

Position Title : Assistant Superintendent - K-8 Schools

Location : Office of Academics

Salary : $130,000 - $145,000

Reports to : Chief Academic Officer

Bargaining Unit : N/A

Telecommuting Eligibility : School-based. Not eligible for telecommuting.

Position Summary

The Assistant Superintendent for K-8 Schools will join a team of Assistant Superintendents supervising a cohort of school leaders and supporting them to dramatically improve outcomes for students. The Assistant Superintendent will balance support with accountability, deploy resources to accelerate growth, coordinate with other departments and teams to problem solve instructional challenges, model excellent leadership and ensure schools under their leadership have strong, positive, performance-driven cultures where students and staff are successful.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Must possess and provide evidence of a Master's Degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan Administrative Certification

Experience:

  • At least three (3) years of successful teaching experience in a K-12 setting or a combination of teaching experience and other relevant K-12 experience required

  • At least five (5) years of successful experience in a school leadership or senior central office role supporting and evaluating teams with demonstrated positive student achievement gains; History of effectively coaching staff towards dramatically improving their performance with documented strong results required

  • At least two (2) years of experience successfully managing large teams of adults towards achieving ambitious outcomes required

  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining a positive, performance-driven climate and culture among a team and/or school

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Office365 tools including Outlook, Teams, Sharepoint, PowerBI

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking, attention to detail, the ability to balance the big picture with detailed steps to reach the end goal and the ability to balance multiple projects under tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and take initiative;

  • Knowledge of academic accountability systems and services

  • Demonstrated experience planning and leading effective professional learning for adults

Essential Functions

  • Supervise and evaluate a cohort of 15-20 K-8 Principals.

  • Ensure school leaders are adhering to and implementing core strategies for school improvement, including a coherent framework and approach for coaching instructional staff to improve their pedagogical performance

  • Analyze data related to the school grading system and use it to drive conversations about school improvement and instructional effectiveness with Principals and school leadership teams; supports principals in the use of data to drive instruction

  • Support the creation of a professional learning community among principals within the cohort

  • Model the creation of a positive performance-driven climate and culture; support Principals in creating the same in their buildings.

  • Promote continuous improvement in instructional leadership and professional development programs to support excellent teaching.

  • Build principals' capacity to operate with autonomy and sound decision making as school leaders

  • Foster learning among schools by promoting information-sharing across schools about resources and effective, innovative practices

  • Facilitate feedback loops to alert central office staff when there is a breakdown in the coordination of school support

  • Support school level instructional leadership teams in setting and achieving goals

  • Drive improved instructional practices at the school level through coaching of school leadership team members; identify and support potential future leaders who may become Principals in the future

  • Coordinate with the Academics department to ensure that resources and support are aligned and prioritized effectively

  • Coordinate with teams to support schools in effectively serving students with IEPs and English Language Learners

  • Support schools in ensuring that all students have pathways to college and career readiness

  • Provide regular, non-evaluative observation and coaching outside of the formal evaluation system

  • Model effective practices for instructional monitoring; lead professional learning on effective instructional monitoring.

  • Support the principal in their work to be excellent talent managers through the use of effective coaching and performance evaluation strategies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Security Clearance

Internal Applicants
