Departmental Overview The Biological, Environmental, Science & Technology (BEST) Region serves the Rausser College of Natural Resources, the Division of Biological Sciences in the College of Letters and Science, and related ORUs, museums, and field stations. The Research Administration function within BEST provides department-level service during the full contracts and grants life cycle to UC Berkeley's PIs and PDs. Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: 4/4/2024 Responsibilities The Research Administrator 2 position within BRS involves providing analytical and financial support, specializing in sponsored award administration and compliance. This work will involve activities associated with forecasting, planning, and managing of research portfolios by performing some or all of the following: consistent and frequent monitoring of contracts, and other funding agreements; reviewing transactions to ensure institutional compliance, including compliance with regulations, terms and conditions; financial management and reporting; and sub-award administration. The incumbent will report to and receive assignments from the Contracts and Grants Supervisor 2. They will work directly with the supervisor to ensure a balanced workload. They will work with senior research administrators to resolve complex issues and gain a better understanding of the research administration function in a university setting and within BRS.
  • Under general supervision, organizes, plans, establishes and monitors fiscal budget control of contracts and grants administration, gifts, endowments, and privately funded projects for faculty research programs.
  • Coordinates and implements budget allocations, conceives of and maintains chart of accounts or other data management tools, and related business processes. Prepares journal entries, maintains and reconciles ledger accounts.
  • Analyzes transactions, expenditures, identifies and resolves discrepancies, financial reports.
  • Applies professional concepts to provide projections, analyze spending and recommend adjustments.
  • Under general supervision, provides post-award financial administration and management for research funds in accordance with organization policy and agency requirements.
  • Assists in support of audit as directed by senior staff.
  • Under general supervision, provides advice and counsel regarding sponsored projects administration to department administrators and PIs.
  • Applies professional knowledge/experience to prepare and review financial transactions. In compliance with institutional and sponsor policies, establishes mandated recordkeeping.
Required Qualifications
  • Ability to manage a high volume of transactions.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Ability to maintain independent judgment, strong organization, communication skills, and a customer service focus.
  • Writing skills to draft persuasive text for a variety of audiences.
Education and Training
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local, sponsor, and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal, and reporting principles.
  • Knowledge of grant funding processes, procedures, and techniques.

  • Non-exempt, paid hourly and bi-weekly.
  • This position is eligible for up to 100% remote work.
