Job Description - Staff Accountant

East Cherry Creek Valley Water and Sanitation District (ECCV) has been sustaining our community by providing safe and reliable water since 1962. Sourced from the South Platte River and non-tributary aquifers, ECCV distributes water to approximately 65,000 customers in the eastern portions of the City of Centennial and unincorporated Arapahoe County. The Staff Accountant is responsible for general ledger management including manual journal entries, bank and investment reconciliations, project accounting and fixed asset management, assisting with period-end accruals, budget preparation, and financial reporting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains detailed financial records of district, enterprise, and other funds, generates monthly financial statements and schedules for presentation to the Board, and completes monthly GL closing activities.
  • Assists Senior Accountant with year-end close, preparation of comprehensive annual financial reporting used by management, bond rating agencies and the state, and generating reports, work papers and backup documentation needed to assist external auditors with annual year-end audit.
  • Provides monthly budget-to-actual expense reports to internal departments and transaction details as needed, a ssists departments in analyzing and evaluating budget-to-actual results, and preparation of annual budget.
  • Assists with tracking capital budgets and recoding any changes/amendments as necessary, inputs capital projects in the accounting software and tracks capital construction contracts and reconciles related payments.
  • Reconciles fixed assets from subledger to general ledger quarterly.
  • Maintains fixed asset additions, disposals, and depreciation in the fixed asset management system.
  • Compiles and process accounts receivables not related to customer billing; maintain record of aging receivables, perform monthly reconciliations, and follow-up on past due accounts when applicable.
  • Creates accounting entries for all non-A/P and payroll related transactions in the general ledger and conducts financial analysis to ensure accuracy.
  • Assists in reconciling all balance sheet accounts and ensures all subsystems outside of the accounting system remain in balance to the general ledger.
  • Generates payroll related benefit payments; p repares bank deposit and scan customer checks daily as needed; reviews A/P and A/R transactions for accuracy.
  • Provides financial related support, training, data, information, special adhoc projects, and reports as needed.
  • Troubleshoots technical issues in accounting system software as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and requirements of accounting; governmental accounting standards, auditing practices, general ledger coding and accounting systems.
  • Strong initiative, problem solving, analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Applications and email.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; accurately analyze and communicate accounting data and information; perform a variety of mathematical calculations; make independent decisions, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Skilled in the use of computers including spreadsheet design and macro creation, database programming, word processing, and software applications.
  • Ability to work independently with broad direction and limited supervision.
  • Previous experience with accounting software.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration or Finance.
  • 3+ years progressively responsible general accounting experience.
  • Governmental or auditing experience preferred.
  • Active status as Certified Public Accountant preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license, pass a background check, and credit check.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

This position consists primarily of office work and requires occasional operation of a district vehicle to various work sites. Office work requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and fax machines. This position requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time with hand/eye coordination: for repetitive motion and data entry. Position includes the occasional lifting and/or moving of items up to 15 pounds and regular lifting of 5 pounds of office items. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Position pay range: Min $59,000/yr to Max $86,900/yr. Pay based on qualifications and experience. ECCV is an equal opportunity employer.
