Job Description - Systems Administrator

The University of Iowa is seeking two Systems Administrators for the Research Services department of the Information Technology Services (ITS) organization, the central IT provider across campus. This is a unique opportunity to work in a supportive, exciting, and mission-focused group dedicated to supporting research computing at the University of Iowa, which is a comprehensive Research 1 institution. The successful candidates will provide systems administration support for the University's High Performance Computer system (HPC) and/or research storage services offered by ITS Research Services.

An interest in learning new technologies is a key component of this position, and the person in this role will have the opportunity to learn about and work with a wide variety of technologies that enable research, including:

  • Linux/Unix systems administration.
  • Configuration management, workflows, containers, and systems automation.
  • High Performance Computing (HPC).
  • Ethernet and high-speed networking technologies.
  • Network storage and data collaboration tools.

ITS values work-life balance and strives to provide flexible work options where possible. These positions are eligible for onsite and hybrid work. Work arrangements will be discussed during the hiring process. Upon the start of employment, a work arrangement form is required to be completed. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Duties of these positions include, but are not limited to:

  • Actively working to promote a welcoming and respectful workforce environment within Research Services, ITS, OneIT, and the University.
  • Maintaining and supporting Linux/Unix systems that make up the research storage services and High Performance Computing system.
  • Working with automation and configuration management tools to provision systems and hardware.
  • Developing software and hardware requirements, as well as recommendations on organization support procedures, guidance, and policies.
  • Participating in creating awareness within the organization of specific changes in hardware and software.
  • Representing and providing feedback on the technology needs of campus researchers to Research Services and the wider IT community.
  • Writing documentation for internal and external audiences.
  • Collecting and analyzing service data/metrics.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Experience (typically 2-4 years) with Unix/Linux in a multi-user environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals from all backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Experience researching, exploring, and solving technical problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a welcoming and respectful workforce environment.
  • Some experience with common programming languages. Examples may include Python, Perl, Ruby, or Bash/Shell.
  • Experience with common IT security hardening techniques.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in continuously learning and applying new ideas to innovative services and technologies.
  • Experience with compliance regimes such as HIPAA, NIST, FISMA, etc.
  • Experience supporting technology in a higher education setting.
  • Experience supporting scientific research
  • Experience with configuration management and automation tools. Examples may include Puppet, SCCM, Chef, Ansible, etc.
  • Some exposure in any setting with virtualization.
  • Experience troubleshooting computer hardware.
  • Experience supporting network file storage
