Job Description - Simulation Lab Manager

General Summary:

The Simulation Lab Manager, within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences’ Center for Clinical Education and Research (CCER), is responsible for managing the daily operations of the CCER nursing laboratory. The incumbent will hire, orient and supervise work study students; will be responsible for the set-up and breakdown of graduate and undergraduate lab sections; will monitor competency testing results and all tutoring services; will accurately prepare test results for clinical coordinator and instructors; will verify all TAs have completed required documentation; and will facilitate communication between sim coordinators, referring clinical instructors and faculty. The incumbent will be responsible for collaborating with the Simulation Operations Specialist and ensuring the CCER delivers lab and simulation-based education efficiently.

Examples of Duties:  

  • Responsible for managing the daily operations of the Clinical Education and Research (CCER) nursing laboratory; monitor and respond to CCER emails and online room reservation requests; adequately staffs CCER reception area; updates electronic display boards.
  • Hire, orient and supervise work study students assigned to the CCER; partner with Simulation Operation Specialist to train work study students to function in the role of CCER Lab Assistant.
  • Serve as a resource to staff, faculty and students concerning CCER services; orient clinical instructors and faculty to the physical layout of the CCER, as well as the policies and procedures of the lab.
  • Reinforce appropriate use of technology, simulation equipment, and task-trainers in the skills lab; provide faculty support in selecting appropriate equipment to help learners meet objectives.
  • Facilitate communication between Simulation Education & Lab Coordinators, faculty and students for all CCER academic and clinical referrals; ensures space availability and supplies are available for course required competency testing.
  • Interact with multiple constituencies, including students, faculty, and UMB departments (IT, AV, Facilities, EH&S, etc.).
  • Supervise and schedule leadership opportunities for senior Student Nurse Mentors participating in skills lab activities.
  • Collaborate with Simulation Operations Specialist to ensure designated learning spaces are prepared for all scheduled lab and simulation activities; oversee preparation and resetting of simulation rooms and skills labs for seamless transitions between lab sections.
  • Connects students seeking resources for emotional, social, and economic support with services offered on campus; provide student-centered support by sharing information about resources available to enhance student success (Ross Center, ESL, etc.).
  • Compiles and distribute weekly announcements and promote CCER events and activities.
  • Collaborate with data management to update user lists and permissions within simulation learning management system.
  • Responsible for opening and closing the skills and simulation lab as needed, including powering on/off simulation equipment and for setting-up and breaking down of lab equipment.
  • Collaborate with Simulation Operations Specialist and outside vendors to ensure all internal and external work orders are completed in a timely manner.
  • Onboard students to simulation learning management systems and software products; assist with registration for open labs, workshops and tutoring; schedule competency testing to occur in skills lab.
  • Manage schedule for lab assistants and graduate teaching assistants that supports the needs of simulation, lab and tutoring services.
  • Conduct tours for internal and external groups and/or individuals; assist Director with Open House and Welcome Day events.
  • Update and maintain CCER library and track all lab items on loan.
  • Supervise the organization, maintenance, and review of inventory database for supplies and resources; responsible for purchasing and maintaining par levels of consumable supplies.
  • Investigates areas for cost-saving measures and implements strategies for practicing sustainability.
  • Implement and maintain safety standards regarding use of equipment and hazardous waste disposal in simulation and skills labs.
  • Collect data pertaining to student use of CCER services and prepare monthly/semester reports, as requested by CCER Director.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of center operations and makes recommendations for improvement to the Director.
  • Present at orientation sessions for all new students, faculty and staff; attend staff meetings and in-service trainings as required.
  • Attend simulation-related conferences, webinars and programs for professional development and networking opportunities with lab managers at academic healthcare simulation centers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: The incumbent must hold a bachelor’s degree and have at least three years of experience in office management, office administration or business management. Experience working in a simulation center is required. Experience in the health care field is preferred. Knowledge of and/or experience with simulation activities in nursing practice preferred.

  • Must be able to move equipment less than 25 lbs independently; occasionally lift/carry over 100 lbs (simulation manikins) with the assistance of others;
