Job Description - Teacher of Students with Disabilites

HARRISON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Harrison, New Jersey

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title:                TEACHER OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Qualifications:

  1. ​​​​​​Valid N.J. Teaching Certificate (K-8 or K-12); endorsement for Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TOSD). Teacher of the Handicap (TOH) Certificate preferred.
  2. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Prior teaching experience preferred, not required. General knowledge of laws and regulations governing special education. Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal registered alien status. Proof of N.J. residency, as required by statute.

Reports to:      Principal; Director of Special Services

Performance Responsibilities:

1.         Make recommendations to the Director of Special Services regarding the assessment, classification and placement of all special needs students.

2.         Assess the academic proficiency/skills of all students with disabilities referred by the Child Study Team. Modify and adapt the District's curriculum and instruction for students with disabilities in grades K-12.

Develop appropriate individualized educational programs for each student with disabilities receiving special needs education and/or related services. Collaborate regularly with classroom teachers, administrators, parents/guardians regarding students' particularized educational programs and other related needs. Work with all Child Study team members and coordinate with them in the development and delivery of educational services to the students with disabilities. Prepare and maintain all appropriate and required case records for assigned students with disabilities, on a timely and current basis. Responsible for staying current and being knowledgeable of recent developments and new regulations and legislation in the field of learning disabilities, including participation in in-service education and professional seminars. Perform all duties as a teacher of students with disabilities, consistent with administrative code, state and federal laws and Board policy. Work with the assigned students to develop sound work, study and recreational habits. Develop ways to incorporate technology in students' lessons, work and activities. 11.       Provide and encourage the participation of students with disabilities, in classroom activities, as appropriate.

Regularly monitor the academic progress of assigned students, providing individualized assistance, as needed. As required by the State, and/or the District, maintain all required records of students with disabilities. Work with assigned students on behavior and classroom decorum to foster effective teaching and learning. Work with administration and staff to foster a safe, courteous, bully-free educational environment for students with disabilities. Communicate regularly and when special needs warrant with parents/guardians to advise of students' progress and to advise of school programs and activities for students with disabilities. Provide regular progress reports on students to parents/guardians. Work cooperatively with school personnel, administration, and appropriate community personnel to create a safe educational environment for the District's pupils, including those with disabilities. Participate in school-level planning, faculty meetings, committees and school activities as assigned and required by the Principal and/or Director of Special Services. Attend and participate in all required parent-teacher conferences, meetings and activities. Demonstrate a consistent pattern of regular attendance and punctuality. Supervise pupil behavior in the classroom, hallways, school buildings, and school grounds and in the immediate school area for the safety and well-being of all concerned. Implement all District policies and procedures to ensure all students can work and learn in a school environment free of harassment, intimidation, and discrimination and bullying. Supervise students with disabilities in out-of-classroom activities, as assigned. Perform other duties within the scope of the certification, as may be assigned by the Principal or Director of Special Services.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Ten (10) months; tenurable.

Salary and benefits as established by Teachers' Agreement.

Evaluated by the Principal and/or Director of Special Services, according to Achieve NJ Standards.
