Scope/Principal Areas of Responsibility:
• Provide legal services for the Regulated Utility business within the Municipal Water business unit of Veolia North America under the supervision of the General Counsel.
• Provide ongoing legal advice and representation (in conjunction with outside counsel) in a variety of areas related to ongoing utility operations, including the following: contract review and negotiations, rate case filings and regulatory matters, permitting, environmental, water supply and allocation, water quality (including PFAS), and general commercial matters.
• Advise Utility personnel on commercial matters, including Company rights and responsibilities under various contracts.
• Provide legal support (as needed) for utility acquisitions and divestitures, including assisting with due diligence, preparing legal risk memoranda, and drafting and negotiating purchase and sale agreements and closing documentation.
• Provide support for administrative proceedings relating to environmental matters and water and wastewater permits, including filing comments with environmental and municipal agencies concerning proposed activities by third parties that may affect Company operations.
• Keep the General Counsel informed of complex, sensitive and/or material matters.
• Able to travel up to 20% (mainly local travel in New York and New Jersey).
Required Skills:
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical skills.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and work with minimal supervision on time-sensitive projects.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interface with internal and external stakeholders.
• Advanced capabilities in Microsoft Word and familiar with Google Workspace applications (including Google Docs and Google Sheet).
Education/Equivalent:
• J.D. degree from a U.S. accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice in New York and/or New Jersey. Will consider other bar admissions.
Work Experience Needed:
• 10+ years in a major law firm or complex corporate environment, with substantive regulatory and commercial law experience.
• Prior experience as in-house counsel preferred.
• Experience with regulated utility operations preferred.
• Experience working with state and local government and regulatory agencies preferred
Work Week : Mon-Fri plus overtime hours
Hours : 8am -5pm (including 1 hour for lunch)
