The position of a Transportation Project Manager I performs engineering support for construction projects and processes various highway permits. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Asset Management:
    • culvert inventory
    • sign inventory (assistance)
    • guardrail inventory
  • Project Management Small to Moderate Sized Projects (Administration, Inspection & Testing):
    • maintenance contracts
    • weed spray
    • guardrail
    • stockpiles
    • asphalt surface treatments
    • rout and seals
    • asphalt paving
    • PCC repair
    • structure rehabilitation
    • box culvert
    • railroad crossings
    • grading
    • fencing,
    • street sweeping
  • Permits:
    • access permits
    • utility permits
    • occupy right-of-way permits
    • encroachment permits
    • encroachment survey
    • revocable occupancy permits (ROP)
  • Project Planning, Plan Preparation & Design:
    • plan project needs and solutions to ensure the development of an effective design.
    • collect information and quantities for plan design.
    • designs and assembles complete sets of plans for maintenance projects.
    • address review comments and send plans for bidding.

This position has a typical 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday; although, hours may vary during construction activity, including weekends.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Transportation Project Manager I is approximately $79,806.00 annually.

Licenses and Certifications:
Certification in one or more materials testing areas and/or one or more inspection areas is required within the first year of employment. Further certification areas will be determined by the supervisor according to job responsibility and needs. Required certifications must be maintained for continued employment. Classes and training in the certification areas are provided through the Department of Transportation.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A Construction Management degree and/or experience performing highway construction inspections and/or knowledge of SDDOT policies, procedures, specifications, and workings.

Work assignments are divided between outdoor tasks in all weather conditions and around highway traffic. Work assignment will also be performed in an office environment.

Knowledge of:

  • civil engineering principles and practices;
  • construction methods, materials, processes, sequences, and technology;
  • construction survey principles and practices (preferred but not required);
  • construction project management (preferred but not required);
  • construction Measurement and Payment (CM&P) and Materials Sampling & Testing (MS&T) software (preferred but not required).

Skill to:

  • operate computers and use Microsoft software;
  • utilize design software for construction project plans;
  • perform construction-related mathematical calculations.

Ability to:

  • demonstrate self-confidence and take action when needed;
  • attend to all details of assignments and complete work properly, accurately and thoroughly;
  • listen attentively to others and clearly convey information and ideas;

  • work to build and maintain friendly relationships with people who can, or might someday be able to provide Information, assistance, or support;
  • work alone with minimal supervision;
  • safely move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance);
  • walk, sit, and stand for extended periods of time;
  • routinely reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
