Position Highlights

The College of Medicine - Phoenix invites applications for experienced Finance and Administration leaders to apply for a new role at a rapidly growing college. This is an opportunity for an outstanding strategic leader with a demonstrated track record of administrative and financial experience, preferably in a complex academic health center and/or medical school setting.

In this role, you will lead the Office of Finance and Administration to support the College's mission. You will report directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine - Phoenix and are the strategic leader for all budgetary and administrative activity in the College, including an annual "all funds" operating budget of over $100 million. The College includes approximately 2,700 faculty, both on-campus and volunteer faculty, who share their skills, expertise and time to training the next generation of physicians in Arizona and beyond. The College is organized into specialty administrative units, centers, core facilities and academic departments, which may include the clinical arm of the department in partnership with Banner - University Medical Group.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and evaluates a comprehensive campus wide administration operations and college-level goals, with an emphasis on associated resource requirements, systems and processes needed to support long-range strategies.
  • Influences leadership, and modifies, develops and executes strategic programs and policies that have an institution-wide impact. 
  • Fosters strong business relationships internally and externally while successfully managing existing business relationships and identify new business opportunities that will enhance the College's business performance. 
  • Stays apprised of college, campus and clinical partners' events and activities to anticipate and support the administrative and business affairs-related needs. 
  • Represents the college on various University committees; communicate information to appropriate constituencies.
  • Advocates, with the Dean, for resources necessary for faculty and the college to achieve excellence and national distinction in research, education and clinical care. 
  • Provides leadership within the college that impacts the policies and practices across the campus.
  • Creates and implements plans to meet college/division/university goals.
  • Directs and partners with college budget and finance staff to preserve and enhance financial assets, including controls and management reporting, oversight of budget projections, capital planning, fund application, expenditures and compliance.
  • Advises Dean/department head/VP/SVP/sometimes the President on setting strategic objectives and goals for the college/division/university. 
  • Makes strategic decisions and has the authority to change the strategic direction of the unit.
  • Leads initiatives and cross functional committees and teams for the college and University.
  • Partners with affiliates, local stakeholders and Phoenix-based UAZ colleges to foster a collaborative interdisciplinary environment on the Phoenix Biosciences Core (PBC).
  • Provides fiscal management and oversight of the college's sponsored research portfolio and serve as key administrative liaison to the University of Arizona Health Sciences (UAHS) and Main Campus administrative units.
  • Reports on milestones and statuses of plans to the Dean and other leadership.
  • Oversees and monitors fulfillment of Dean's Office commitments (e.g., current/future startup, renovation, salary and program development) advising the Dean as to best utilization and leveraging of college resources.
  • Directs planning future needs for hiring, research, student support and other college initiatives. 
  • Provides analysis, planning and strategic budgeting for a range of new enterprises and initiatives. 
  • Develops and negotiates the financial component of agreements and contracts between the University, affiliated partners and/or external entities as directed by the Dean; works with the Office of General Counsel (OGC) and other content experts to provide timely information for completion of contracts.
  • Responsible for preparation and fiscal management of the College of Medicine - Phoenix "all funds" operating budget (~$100 million annually). This includes working with UAHS finance and other University budget and finance stakeholders to establish and realign budget categories, monitor account balances, encumbrances and tentative transactions and complete fiscal year-end close reporting.
  • Manages a staff of higher managers and directors in a multi-faceted organizational unit, including informational technology, facilities and human resources units, in partnership with UAHS and University centralized units.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience and success in leading change initiatives, formulating policy and development and implementation of new strategies and procedures.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, along with the ability to take the initiative to resolve issues
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, supervisory and team management skills.
  • Effective organizational and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of accounting, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of financial strategic planning, development, and evaluation.
  • Proven interpersonal skills, along with the ability to collaborate with all levels of university personnel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software programs (i.e., MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook, or comparable software programs.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. Master's preferred.
  • Eleven (11) years of related work experience, including seven (7) years of leadership and managerial experience, preferably in large complex institutions or organizations, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Requires experience in leading multiple teams, projects, programs and/or functions.

Preferred Qualifications

* Master's degree in an administration, business, finance, public affairs or related field of study. * Current Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. * 7 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in an academic medical center, health care organization, health sciences college, university or related entity.
