WATER PRACTICE


Michael Baker International's Water Group provides innovative consulting, planning and engineering solutions for the entire spectrum of the water cycle. We have proven experience in providing a full range of professional services from scientific and technical analysis, concept through design, and construction support services. Protection and management of water resources starts at the watershed level and follows the movement of water through urban and agricultural areas, streams, lakes and reservoirs, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and water/wastewater treatment plants. DESCRIPTION
Michael Baker International is seeking a Civil Engineer with structural engineering experience in high-wind design and construction of residential and commercial structures to join our team. The successful candidate must have a superior knowledge of wind resilient building practices and wind-related ICC building codes and referenced standards. The successful candidate will be an integral member of the Emergency Management and Response Office of Michael Baker and will primarily support the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in their core mission. This includes collaboration with state, local, tribal, and territorial entities to increase the public's risk awareness and drive action to reduce risk through higher standards and building codes. Support includes policy development, analysis and implementation related to building codes, and could include participation in mitigation assessment teams post-disaster. The position may also support other clients throughout the Nation.


Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare wind hazard and building performance studies, documents, maps, basic reports, and other documentation to support FEMA's Building Science Program.
  • Interpret data and prepare deliverables for projects, ensuring adherence to quality control standards and processes.
  • Perform technical analyses, calculations and tasks as needed.
  • Support development of technical materials, presentations, and/or training related to FEMA Building Science.
  • Communicate with Project Managers and other team members, participate in meetings as necessary, and document important action items.
  • Assist Project Managers and other team members ensure that project/task schedules and budgets are met.
  • Satisfy project requirements by ensuring established business processes are followed and that quality standards and deadlines are met.
  • May assist with defining scope of work and associated level of effort, quantities, and cost estimates.
  • Stay knowledgeable of trends and current developments related to the field of building science and associated codes and standards.
  • Responsible for maintaining professional licensure.
  • May be required to attend building code hearings on occasion.
  • May assist with proposal production and implementing marketing initiatives.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Four-year degree in Engineering or Architecture.
  • Graduate work or degree preferred. A Master's degree can be substituted for 1-2 years of experience.
  • Registered Professional Engineer, Structural Engineer or Registered Architect.
  • 6-8 years of experience in building design, forensics and building science field with an emphasis on high wind resistance and knowledge of flood resistance.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance, U.S. Citizenship preferred due to contract requirements.
  • Ability to travel as needed (up to 25%, depending on potential post-disaster assignments, potential instruction for training courses, conference presentations, etc.).
  • Knowledge and experience with FEMA Building Science, including publications and building code documents.
  • Familiarity with and interest in updates to codes and standards including those published by the International Code Council (ICC), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), as they relate to the field of building science and natural hazards including wind, flood, hurricane, tornado, winter storm, hail, earthquake, wildfire, and other high-wind events.
  • Demonstrated technical excellence.
  • Strong track record of project delivery with a drive for quality product and financial excellence.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, proactive communicator and problem-solver.
  • Capability to work in a dynamic environment, including a demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
  • Strong work ethic and have the drive to be a leader in the company and in the professional community.


PREFERRED

  • Experience in a post-disaster reconnaissance environment.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
  • Industry involvement.

The salary range for this position is $74,093 - $154,361.
