Construction Resident Engineer

Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Supervising Transportation Engineer, Construction Manager, the incumbent functions as Construction Resident Engineer to administer the Construction Program within an area or corridor. The Construction Resident Engineer acts as a first line supervisor to have charge of varied and difficult transportation engineering work in the field or office involving the supervision of engineers and others engaged in transportation development activities. The incumbent administers major and minor construction projects ensuring contract compliance and acts within the authority of the State Contract Act, the “Engineer’s Authority” of the Standard Specifications, the Caltrans Construction Manual, and any other applicable administrative instructions. Projects may vary from one million to billions of dollars.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.  To apply for the exam, please click and search by typing in the classification title.

Working Conditions

Position located at 384 Bel Marin Keys Blvd, Novato, Marin County

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
• Statement of qualifications (SOQ) required.
