INDOT's Graduate Engineer Development Program (GEDP) is a one-year Indianapolis-based rotational program that focuses on developing technical problem-solving and leadership skills. Engineers will spend time in each of INDOT's engineering departments and upon completion of the program, will transition into their choice of assignment at INDOT; based on availability of positions, supervisor assessments, and the engineer's preference. The goal of the GEDP is to support the engineer's ability to learn as much about on-the-job civil engineering as possible, as well as fostering professional development and connecting the engineer with 100s of people at INDOT. The GEDP is designed for INDOT's future leaders.

About the Job:

The Graduate Engineer Development Program (GEDP) is a one-year Indianapolis-based rotational program through the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to develop technical problem solving and leadership skills. Participants spend varying times in each department and upon completion of the program, will work with the GEDP supervisor to find a permanent assignment at INDOT; based on availability of positions, supervisor assessments, and the participant’s preference. The rotational areas include: construction, geotechnical, hydraulics, materials management, multi-modal, traffic engineering, traffic management, bridge inspection, pavement, construction management, design, bridge design/rehab and inspection, planning, real estate, construction, and design/survey. The program supports the participant’s professional growth with training, mentoring, and networking opportunities. This position reports directly to the Talent Development Manager.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Participate in trainee meetings to exchange information, share unique experiences, and provide ongoing assessment of the development program;
  • Complete assignments in each rotation;
  • Other duties may include: o Perform engineering calculations and analysis using specialized software;
  • Prepare construction progress reports, prepare special reports relating to problems and delays, and examine and approve daily field reports prepared by others;
  • Ensure that both INDOT and contractor employees are performing work in a safe manner in compliance with OSHA and other applicable standards, reporting deficiencies to appropriate office;
  • Collect samples and testing of aggregates, steel, asphalt, soils and other materials;
  • Assist in design function within departments;
  • Participate in quality control/quality assurance programs in materials and traffic engineering to ensure policy and best practices are in place;
  • Review construction contracts for compliance with and uniform enforcement of established policies, standards, and specifications;
  • Assist in performing geotechnical investigations (including field drilling, laboratory testing, and design engineering) to determine the properties of soil and rock and provide recommendations for the foundation of various INDOT projects, such as roads, bridges, culverts, pipes, retaining structures, and landslide corrections;
  • Assist in performing routine biennial bridge inspections;
  • Resolve conflicts and interpret problems with contractors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) from an ABET accredited school;
  • Less than one year experience;
  • Engineer-in-Training license within 6 months of hire;
  • Maintain valid Driver’s License and have reliable transportation;
  • Willing to travel 40% of time to district offices;
  • Adapt readily to new situations and changes in workplace;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to work with multi-functional teams;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills;
  • Ability to effectively prioritize a variety of projects/function;
  • Ability to work independently, accept responsibility, and excel under pressure of multiple deadlines;
  • General knowledge of technical writing.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
