Job Description - Music Teacher

The High School Music Teacher is responsible for providing music education to students in grades 9-12. This role involves developing and implementing a comprehensive music curriculum that includes vocal and instrumental music instruction. The teacher will create an engaging and inclusive learning environment that encourages students to develop their musical skills, appreciate various music genres, and participate in performances.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development and Delivery:

  • Develop and implement music lesson plans that align with state standards and school curriculum.
  • Teach various aspects of music including music theory, history, performance, and appreciation.
  • Provide instruction in vocal and instrumental music, including band, choir, and/or orchestra.
  • Incorporate a variety of musical styles and cultural traditions in the curriculum.

Classroom and Ensemble Management:

  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters student engagement and participation.
  • Manage classroom and ensemble rehearsals effectively, ensuring a productive and respectful atmosphere.
  • Establish clear expectations for student behavior and performance.

Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Design and administer assessments to evaluate student progress in music knowledge and performance skills.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students and parents.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and progress.

Performance Coordination:

  • Plan and coordinate music performances, concerts, and other events.
  • Prepare students for participation in school and community performances.
  • Collaborate with other faculty and staff to organize interdisciplinary events and activities.

Professional Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, including other music teachers, support staff, and administration, to enhance the music program.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with music education best practices.
  • Engage with the school community through events, parent-teacher conferences, and other activities.

Student Support:

  • Identify and address individual student needs, providing additional support or enrichment as necessary.
  • Encourage students to explore their musical interests and potential.
  • Foster a love of music and an appreciation for lifelong learning and participation in the arts.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Music, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree or additional coursework in Music Education is preferred.

Certification:

  • Valid teaching certification/license for the state in which the school is located.
  • Endorsement in music or a related field is highly desirable.

Experience:

  • Previous teaching experience in music, preferably at the high school level.
  • Experience in directing ensembles (band, choir, orchestra) and organizing performances is a plus.

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of music theory, history, and performance techniques.
  • Proficiency in playing and teaching a variety of musical instruments.
  • Excellent classroom and ensemble management skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate students.

Working Conditions:

  • Standard school hours with occasional evenings or weekends for performances, events, or professional development.
  • Classroom and rehearsal settings, requiring movement and interaction with students throughout the day.
