Job Duties

Soils Foundation Technician (Driller), Office of Geotechnical Engineering, PN 20049427

Position is 100% travel with overnight travel required. Will be working outdoors including during inclement weather. Selected candidate will be provided with an ODOT truck to travel to worksites. Outside of overnight travel, truck must be parked at ODOT garage/outpost at the end of work day; employee can choose location to park truck based on proximity to employee's place of residence.

  • Work outside with heavy equipment to collect soil, bedrock, and groundwater samples for geotechnical explorations
  • Work with a dedicated crew, typically 2 to 3 members across Ohio
  • Provide the necessary information collected to office personnel through the use of tablet computers, written and oral communications, and close observations

Official Position Description:

In the Office of Geotechnical Engineering, operates rotary drilling equipment, hand sampling equipment & transport/support equipment (e.g., truck or track mounted drill, hollow stem auger, drill rod equipment, high speed wire-line core drill, backhoe, dozer, pickup, semi-tractor & trailer) in order to gather statewide soil, rock & water samples. Collects & evaluates samples noting specific characteristics to include texture, color, consistency &/or contents; classifies core samples based upon visual evaluations; performs blow-count test; calculates resistance (N-Value); measures ground water level with electric tape; calculates elevation & adjusts drilling depth to meet target depths or elevations; follows Specifications for Geotechnical Explorations (SGE) guidelines & drilling instructions; installs slope inclinometer & monitors well installations; collects & preserves peat, soil & rock samples; conducts soil analysis. Performs field surveys using Global Positioning System (GPS) & survey equipment. Maintains soils & foundation equipment (e.g., truck and track rotary drills, core truck); cleans equipment & containers; recommends repairs & troubleshoots problems; performs safety checks on equipment to ensure proper functioning of drills. Lifts up to 96 pounds (e.g., full size bags of concrete, bentonite augers).

Performs miscellaneous duties (e.g., flagging, reconnaissance, lab testing of soil & rock samples using testing equipment such as a hydrometer). Operates laptop computer & related software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; KRONOS, Enterprise Information Management System (EIMS)) (e.g., reads emails, enters time worked, communicates with coworkers, enters information).

Qualifications 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in operation of heavy earth drilling equipment (e.g., truck mounted earth auger, hollow stem auger, drive rod equipment, high speed wire-line core drill, front end loader, drag line crane, backhoe or earth mover) & related safety practices; valid Class 'A' commercial driver's license. -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
