Job Summary
Provide live musical accompaniment for children’s creative/ballet/modern dance classes at the Tanner Dance studio on the University of Utah campus and/or offsite at partner elementary schools throughout the Salt Lake Valley. Mileage compensation is provided if accompanist plays in multiple locations.
Responsibilities
Accompany departmental classes, auditions and rehearsals. Continuously research and build appropriate repertoire. May serve as an assistant accompanist or musician for departmental rehearsals, performances, guest instructors and choreographers. May perform supervisory duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated proficiency in piano (preferably as an accompanist for a dance class), and demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service is required.
Preferences
Proficiency in piano or other musical instrument accompaniment. Ability to improvise skillfully in a variety of musical styles. Music reading skills, and the ability to use written music as a springboard for improvisation. Ability to play music for long periods of time while remaining attentive, alert, and engaged with a dance class. Ability to quickly respond to verbal and visual cues and and incorporate directions into improvisational musical performances. Ability to take direction, work well with others, and communicate effectively with adults as well as children.
Additionally, previous experience as an accompanist for dance, choir, theatre or other ensemble rehearsals is a plus. Previous experience working in settings where musical improvisation and/or sight-reading is required is a plus.
