Requirements Custodian - Custodial Services - Georgetown University Law Center Job Overview The Custodian provides building support services that ensure a safe, clean and comfortable environment for the University community in responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

  • Performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe and pleasant physical environment
  • Other duties assigned are, but not limited to: furniture moving, office cleaning, class room cleaning, restroom cleaning, exterior entrances cleaning, emergency support, supporting special event set up and break down, and cleaning all public spaces
  • Availability and willingness to work during emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal. Examples of emergency service are snow removal; inclement weather and water damage clean up
  • Performance of duties involves using tools, equipment, and supplies of the trade




Work Interactions


Reporting directly to the Manager of Custodial Services, the Custodian may report to another manager or staff member as assigned by the immediate supervisor or Director of Facilities Management. They regularly interact with all levels of faculty, staff and students, as well as general public in performance of duties.


They are expected to perform in a professional manner, comply with policies and practices, be flexible with respect to scheduling, and work as a part of a team.



Work Mode Designation


This position has been designated as On-Campus . Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Requirements and Qualifications

  • Ability to perform all levels of physical work including lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and scrubbing - requiring a strong back and endurance for physical labor.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to sit, walk and stand while working, and to use arms and hands to lift and carry up to fifty pounds and custodial equipment
  • Good attitude and customer service orientation
  • Ability to read, write, and converse in English in order to read and understand product label instructions, policies and procedures, and to effectively discuss custodial matters with supervisors and others
  • Ability and willingness to observe safety rules and regulations that meet state, federal, and local governing jurisdictions
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia for driving University vehicles when necessary and ability to qualify - post hire - for conformance with the University Driving Policy
  • High School diploma or equivalency preferred




Emergency Designation The Custodian is designated as an Emergency employee, with the requirement to be availability and willing to work during emergency situations such as staffing shortages, inclement weather (including snow removal), and water damage clean up.
