Job Summary



This position exists to serve the students and staff of the Surgical Technology and Health Sciences & Nursing Programs. Under limited supervision, the Lab Assistant will assist primarily the surgical technology instructors and students in the lab by demonstrating techniques and will carry out prescribed instructional activities for students under the direction of surgical technology instructors and, as warranted, other health sciences and nursing instructors.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS

1. Provide Assistance to the Surgical Technology students

  • Demonstrate surgical equipment, instruments, and surgical procedures to students in lab setting.
  • Assist students with surgical technology skills in the lab/classroom setting.
  • Facilitate student group learning sessions and monitor surgical tech classroom and labs.
  • Monitor and supervise students in open study labs and surgical skills lab.
  • Tutor and provide support to students with academic difficulties.
  • Work one on one with students to clarify and reinforce materials taught in surgical technology courses.
  • Direct students to appropriate sources of information.
  • Meet with instructors to offer suggestions to improve existing lab protocols or to introduce new materials to enhance overall lab course effectiveness.

2. Maintain equipment and supplies in the Surgical Technology Lab and Health Sciences & Nursing Labs

  • Ensure sufficient quantities of supplies and equipment are available within the surgical technology lab and assist other staff in health sciences and nursing labs so that assignments and demonstrations can be properly conducted by regularly inventorying supplies and equipment on hand and informing the faculty of needed items to be ordered.
  • Prepare the physical layout of the lab so that supplies and equipment are ready for student laboratory work. This is done by discussing with instructors the requirements for each lab set-up, preparing or overseeing the preparation of needed supplies, materials, setting out special instruments/equipment, and cleaning up after labs are completed.
  • Oversee the security of the open lab so that instruments, equipment and supplies are used properly and kept safe by verifying the presence of the instruments and equipment, keeping records of items used in the lab, monitoring consumption of supplies by students, protecting instruments, equipment and supplies from use by unauthorized person, and implementing procedures that provide for the security of the lab and the students’ work.
  • Contact surgical supply and other representatives for a quote and prepare purchase order for supplies that are needed.

3. Provide assistance to Surgical Technology Instructor

  • Assist with documentation, record keeping and preparation of learning materials.
  • Participate in seminars, workshops, and in-service programs as assigned.
  • Monitor and gather documentation for Surgical Technology Program applications.
  • Follow up with student applicants’ questions by email/phone calls.
  • Proctoring student exams.
  • Prepare student documentation for membership to AST and the CST Exam.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

4. Provide assistance to Health Sciences & Nursing OASIs

  • Access ISRS and print Student Degree Audit Report (DARS) for assisting.
  • Help organize program rubrics, DARS and Health Sciences & Nursing programs’ applications for faculty review.
  • Assist in scheduling TEAS tests through Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) for Nursing and Health programs.
  • Help with communications during application season.
  • Proctoring TEAS test. Trouble shoot during TEAS test.
  • Assist in storage room filing and organization.
  • Data entry support for OASI in student immunization record keeping on D2L.
  • Tally survey results for programs as needed (Clinical sites, advisory board, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

5. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of teaching/tutoring experience in Surgical Technology at the high school level or above
  • Post-secondary or industry certificate/diploma/degree or relevant licensure in Surgical Technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to assist students in being able to perform their lab/clinical skills.
  • Surgical Technology knowledge of anatomy, instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge and application of principles and practices of aseptic technique.
  • Knowledge and application of current infection control procedures is needed.
  • Ability to function independently to carry out assigned tasks and duties.
  • Maintain equipment and environment in the lab.
  • Ability to work effectively with the students, faculty and clinical staff in a safe learning environment.
  • Report to work regularly and on time.
  • Communicate with others in a cooperative and respectful manner.
  • Surgical Technology Education, minimum 3 years’ experience
  • Current AST membership and Certification from NBSTSA.
  • Have a minimum total of two years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.

In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
