How You’ll Make an Impact

The Senior Staff Scientist will support the NPDL group in development of lubricants, coolants, and automotive chemicals products. Provides advanced analysis and troubleshooting support required by internal or external customers relating to automotive chemical product lines. In the role, you would be responsible for:

  • Conducting work requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of standard techniques, processes, and criteria; refers to knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and principles and practice in related specialties.
  • Devising new approaches to problems encountered; works within conventional practices but may incorporate complex features; receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems.
  • Designing, building and operating experimental rigs for testing lubricants and materials.
  • Conducting "hands on" theological and analytical testing of automotive chemicals in the laboratory.
  • Developing new technology for implementation in Valvoline® driveline products, coolant, brake and other services.
  • Performing advanced chemistry and tribology research for development of next generation automotive chemical products.
  • Providing technical expertise to support product improvement by working in conjunction with internal groups, OEM customers, government agency and leading universities.
  • Planning, scheduling, conducting, or coordinating detailed phases of work for a part of a major project or total project of moderate scope.
  • Generating product claims data via lab, bench, engine or field testing to leverage Valvoline's technology advantages across entire product line.
  • Providing work direction to lab scientist(s) and mentor to support their career development.
  • Providing advanced analysis and troubleshooting support required by internal or external customers relating to automotive chemical product lines.
  • Conducting research effectively by maintaining accurate records of experiments and analyses performed, conducting relevant literature searches, and maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of all current methods of experimentation.

What You’ll Need

  • MS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field such as Material Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry
  • Minimum 5 years of experience preferred in the following areas:

    • Theoretical and experimental analysis and application of hydrocarbons as cleaners/degreasers
    • Numerical modeling of mechanical system
    • Automotive chemical formulations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Multi-tasker and problem-solver
  • Familiarity with Engine/Transmission hardware, operation and design
  • Attention to detail and desire to complete quality work products
  • Ability to work well with others and comprehend instruction quickly
  • Knowledge of Engine and Transmission Performance Testing
  • Knowledge of oil specifications and qualification procedures is advantageous
  • Experience with analytical test methods and laboratory methods
  • Computer Skills - specifically Excel, Power Point, SAP and QC software
  • Travel is required to perform some responsibilities of position (up to 10%)
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
