Requisition Number: JPF09466 The K-12 Data Science Education Center (DSEC) is an international project in the UCLA Department of Statistics & Data Science that develops and disseminates K-12 data science curricula; designs, provides professional development for teachers to implement the curricula; develops and maintains technology tools to assist student learning and data analysis; manages a technology infrastructure to support data science education in over 70 school districts in the United States and abroad; and promotes policy change to improve data and statistical literacy. This project consists of a Director, an Associate Director of Professional Development, an Associate Director of Curriculum Development, an Associate Director of Technology, and an Associate Director of Research. We seek a candidate to serve as Associate Director of Operations for the K-12 Data Science Education Project with a primary focus on project management. The Associate Director reports to the Director of the K-12 Data Science Education Center and the Chief Administrative Officer of the Department of Statistic & Data Science. The Associate Director is responsible for administering all projects of the K-12 Data Science Education Project, which include (a) Curriculum Development (b) Technology Development (c) Research (d) Professional Development and (e) administrative staff. The Associate Director will lead a staff with one direct report and will work very closely with the associate directors of curriculum development, technology, research and professional development to ensure project goals and deadlines are met. RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Associate Director functions as the Chief Operating Officer for DSEC. Working closely with the Director, the Associate Director will establish, with cooperation from the other associate directors, project deliverables and timelines and will ensure that the various teams have the resources and information required to meet deadlines. The Associate Director will report to the Director and provide progress updates, point out potential challenges, and establish appointments between the other Associate Directors and the Director. In addition, the Association Director will oversee contracts administration for domestic and international school district partnerships. Specific responsibilities are outlined as follows: (1) Business Administration & Human Resources
Maintain the Center budget by administrating accounts to ensure sufficient financial resources to carry out the mission; serve as primary liaison with district partners by drafting and managing all domestic and international contracts for 70+ district partnerships; conduct regular internal fiscal audits and annual large-scale fiscal audits for contract revenue and income; maintain relationships and serve as the primary liaison between DSEC and all external contractors and vendors; ensure that invoices are disseminated and paid on time. Oversee onboarding, training, and supervision of new support staff and graduate student employees; provide or arrange for executive assistance to the Executive Director, Faculty Advisor, and Associate Directors; serve as the primary liaison between DSEC and UCLA campus departments including Business Financial Services, Office of Information Technology (OIT), Office of Human Subjects, UCLA Legal, UCLA Marks Department, Campus Human Resources (CHR), the Graduate Division, Office of the Dean of Physical Sciences, Corporate Financial Services, Purchasing & Accounts Payable, Academic Personnel, as well as university academic departments; support morale for employees working across diverse environments. (2) Project Management
Coordinate with the Associate Directors of Professional Development, Curriculum Development, and Research to ensure that all deliverables and timelines are met; draft and submit regular reports to funding agencies, determine schedules and timelines in order to provide services on time, foresee problems and coordinate changes in deliverables amongst the associate directors. (3) Research
Work with the Associate Director of Research to manage all Human Subjects compliance activities for research related to DSEC projects; facilitate and submit proposals for funding to aid research; ensure that reports required by funding agencies are on time; and maintain oversight of the project's commitment to data privacy by coordinating the review and approval of data privacy agreements between the university and DSEC partners. 4) Professional Development
In alignment with the goals and vision of the ThinkData Ed project, administer programs (e.g., professional development, follow-up sessions, workshop series, conferences, district-wide programs) that focus on data science education and will manage the development/facilitation of professional learning opportunities and coaching for K-university students, teachers, faculty, administrators, and staff. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in Education or related area (required at the time of application) OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 5 years of supervisory and project management experience
  • Knowledge of data science education promotion, especially as it relates to mathematics education in underserved and underrepresented communities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of education and data science terminology, principles, and practices
  • Experience with/knowledge of UCLA departmental systems and policies (e.g., Business Finance Services, Legal, Internal Risk Management, Information Technology, Human Subjects, Accounting, Purchasing, Human Resources)
  • Understanding of both UC and California school district Human Subjects/IRB requirements and policies
  • Demonstrated experience in developing contractual agreements with partners and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated skill in writing and editing of proposals, reports and articles
  • Experience leading teams, problem solving, reacting nimbly to changing situations
  • Ability to create and maintain budgets and conduct detailed financial audits
  • Knowledge of a range of project management software tools (e.g., Salesforce, Learning Stream)
  • Knowledge of high school data science education SALARY:
